We do not mention here those colleg-es that profess to confine themselves to col lege work, aud yet have their pro fessors do preparatory work. So long1 as these conditions continue, anything- like a g-ood grade of schol arship will be impossible. College professors will continue to waste time and energy on men who ought to be in the preparatory schools: he preparatory schools will employ incompetent teachers because they are cheap. Why shouldn't they? repared or unprepared their pupils are going- to be admitted to the col- eges. -X- -X- y; tsC c: A.,f ' H. In view of these facts, the follow ing conditions of membership in the Association is , important: 4 'As a pre-requisite to membership colleges must enforce a minimum of require ment in their entrance examinations. There a line of demarcation is strict- y drawn between the institutions which do strictly collegiate work and those doing. academic work and competing with academics and high schools." Reference to the list of institutions composing the association will show that the most of the leading colleges and universities of the South are among them. ' There is 110 rea son why the organization shonld not, within the next ten years, work a revolution in educational methods and in the standard of education of the South.
