Those who have heard the aylor Brothers in their witty and umorous lectures know what a reat it would be to hear them ilone, not taking into account the uartet of excellent voices which ccompanies them on this occassion. hey will be here on the 7th of December. Historical Society. The second meeting of the His- pncal Society- for this year was piled to order at 7:30 p. m. Tues day evening by Dr. K. P. Battle, resident. Mr. Shaffner de- ;Cnbed in detail the work of the mmissioners, telling of their many fardships and trials, especially in running the line through the dismal swamp, a distence of fifteen miles. Mr. W. B. He showed how Salem was founded in 1769 ac cording to the plans of the Count. His paper was a very valuable one and was listened to with much inter est. ''"" . Mr. Wood read a paper, on the ' Acts of the Council of Safety of Wilmington, N. C, of which Cor nelius Hammet was chairman." The paper was well written. Prof. Harrington read a paper on "Word-Coinage in Naevius," who died at the beginning of the 2nd century B. C. Comments on the paper were made by Profs. Hume and Toy. Prof. Toy presented a review of Keller's Bilder a as dcr Deutchen Litteratur, a new book oh German Litterature. The book gives in .a readable style a survey of the whole subject. Dr. Hume called attention to Bar rett Wendell's book on English Compostion. Mr. Wills spoke of Bucklen's "Practical Exercises in English," intended to supplement A. S. Hill's Foundations of Rhetoric." Prof. Harrington cailed attention to some valuable libraries to be sold in Leipsic. Frot. .Ball called attention to a -aluable article "A Plea for the Study of Latin Grummar," in The Nation of Nov. 21. After a general Conference,, the Club adjourned. B: SORRELL.
