EDITOR TAR HEEL, Dear Sir: In reply to the question in your late issue relative to the use of the arc lisfhts over the walks to the main street of our village I would say they were put there to furnish light and were fulfilling" their mis sion until some one who did not ap predate their use fired a pistol bullet through the feeding- mechanism and stopped their working. Very truly, J. W. Gore. With all due respect to the man agement of the Company, we will state a few facts bearing on our first statement. We have been a ware, for some time, of the darkness on the walks leading form the. col lejre buildings to the main street of the village. But does one pistol ball shot through one lamp cause the stoppage of four, they being ar ranged in- two circuits? Has the Company taken into consideration the fact, that the loss caused by an ignoramus must be borne, and or dered the injured machinery If this has been done the needed piece must be of foreign origin, as the the accident happened several weeks ago. The destructive . spirit, among some of our students is very annoy ing, but all should not be forced to suffer on account of the med dling of a few babies. Have the other lights been on when needed? We noted on the occasion of tht Dramatic Club's sec ond appearance, all of the arc lamps were turned off. There must have been a scarcity of electricity or an avalanche of pistol balls, we are not prepared to say which one of the two. Luna was shining on this occa sion, but as she often does, behind a layer of dense clouds. Culture Meeting. Dr. Hume's class in Sacred Lit erature is doing some profitable work. At its meeting several interesting papers were read on the "Reform ers before the Reformation". Mr. Coker read a paper on Paulicians, Albigenses, and Waldens'ans"; Mr. Ray read one on "Wycliffe and the Lollard Movement in England"; Mr. Bahnson, on "The Moravians". All the papers were thorughly instructive and interesting, and an equally pleasant meeting is antici pated when the class will discuss the Reformation itself. The date will be announced later. Base Ball Schedule. Below will be found some of the games aranged by the management for the coming, season.' Trinity College,Durham, Mar.21st. Oak Ridge,Chapel Hill, " 26th. . " " . " 27th. " 25. May, 2nd. Communicated. There was a college teacher once Of Anglo Saxon bent And when he late from breakfast came Down through a hole he went. F'irst come a dainty pair of feet A body short and lean And then a pair of grey side burns ' With a face stuck in between. A pair of rhotoerstnic eyes, With a Miltonic nose, A Classic broad Shakesperian brow, And dust all over.his clothes. But scarcely had he reached the floor When to the door he rushed, With anger on his classic brow Which Caused the boys to hush. Who stole my pants!, he squalled in rage With:fingers pointing straight To where some luckless Sophomore It happened alwassat(e). You little imp! I'll run you ont, I'll hold you up to shame, If you don't shut your little mouth I'll call you out by name. But now, dear reader, we will pause, The curtain we will drop; For he would cuss a long long time T. Ere we could make him stop. Then I Think of Her. When the rain comes pouring down: Pattering on the roof all day,1 And I stay in my room alone, And callers stay away; Oh then I. think of her my love, The one so true.so fond and dear, And rain drops falling on the roof, . Like sweet music bringing a tear. When the sun comes blazing forth, Warming flowers frail and sweet; And people smile with joy and bow, To others whom they meet; Oh then I think of my love, And think a lot I dare suppose; For sun light never falls upon, Fairer flowers than my rose. ABRS. A Dream. .A Normal and Industrial girl fell asleep, Wrapped up in sweet innocence three lay- ers deep, She dreamed she'd make "E", but with , far greater joy, While dreaming she dreamed she had turn ed to a boy. "Oh now I'll have pockets", she said with a laugh, "And I'll know where to find my trunk keys at least half Of the time my trunk's locked"-here her brain gave a whirl, The rising-bell rang. She was only a girl." Captured. He asked fair Maude to marry; By letter she replied, He read it she refused him,' He shot himself and died. He might have been alive now And she his happy bride. If he had read the post script Upon the other side. Ex. ii 1 3 C3 x i l; t2 t o Outnumbered. Chicago has purchased the manu scripts and libraryof the Jate histo rian Bancroft for $80,000. Vanderbilt's Indoor Athletic Ex hibition seems to have been a com plete success. Pennsylvania's base ball schedule will number 28 games. They do not take a Southern trip. Pennsylvania has recently had a gilt of $500,000, for the encourage ment of liberal studies'. Penton has resigned the captaincy of the Virginia foor ball team for " -wr 1 the next season. His successor ac cording to Topics, will probably be Groner.Hoxton or Cocke. The res ignation was caused through some clash with the authorities. Applicants for teams at Lehigh must not have more than one condi tion in their studies. Of their ap plicants for the team this year, eight are debarred from playing un til they better their record Petri ken, Nevises and Goss are among number. v ' The Tar Heel, $1.50 per Year.
