University to give anything; to Ath
letics or to any other movement
which does nbt advance their inter
ets. To this class of men we hav
nothing to say as we do not think
our plan. "concerns them.
Another class are those who re
cognize the good . of Athletics and
who are not able to give as much as
four dollars a year. Men of such a
class, according to our narrow ex
perience, wish to see all good move
ments prosper, and are willing to
give them their support as far as
they are financially able. Also such
men are busy men, as a rule, who
endeavor to improve every opportun
ity, arid of course they might con
sider many other branches as mor
in accord with their interests. So
we do not feel that we are wound
ing their feelings or tryim to in
fringe on their rights when we pro
pose such a plan. Instead, we be
teve, that they will recognize that
it is good - for" Athletics, and will
gladly add to the funds as far as
cheir ability will permit.
Then the third class, composed of
those who are able and willing to
give a substantial amount each year
This is the class which would
make up : the Association and we
think "that it - includes a lanre ma
jority of the students. Many of this
;lass now fail to make their sub
icriptions larger because they have
riot recognized our many needs and
because they are apt to be influen
ced by the presentation of a sub
scription list which contains many
smaller subscriptions. We' believe
that this class of men will be triad
to adopt our plan and thus put our
athletics on a firmer fihancil foundation
In our present condition, while we
thank most heartily those of our A-
lumni who have aided us, we regret
that only a few take much interest
in our athletic life, beyond a pass
ing interest in the result" of our
games. . '
We " think, if the matter ' were
properly presented to them, by
the Association, many, especial-
y among the younger ones, would
be glad to become members of the
Association, thus giving us a revenue
rom the Alumni which is now en
irely absent.
Though we advocate the plan of
having the athletic dues in accor
dance with the ability of the aver
age student, yet we would be glad
to have it understood that this did
not restrict either alumni or stu
dents from adding to the amount.
As to the practical workings of
such a system, we believe "that it
would at least put us in a position
to properly support our teams each
season, and it is probable that it
would leave a surplus, each year,
which would remove the athletic
debt, and finally make it ' so that
Athletics could help other depart
ments of the University. '
We invite the Advisory Commit
tee, Alumni and students to give us
their opinions in regard to eur plan.
We urge upon the Association the
present and increasing need of alle
viating the existing evils and we
beg them to consider this plan. It,
'is, at least, worth that much,' and
the time has surely come when some
radical change is necessary.
