Gentlemen :-Of course we do no
kuozv who wrote "Honi Soit Qui
Mai y Pense" in your last issue,
but we think of several very attrac
tive young ladies in the State who
are just about the age mentioned,
and one of them writes ooetrv. On
the strength of this, the following
lines are respectfully dedicated to
"X. Y. Z." Freshman. ,.r.
The Adventures of Love.
Venus lost her magic girdle
After Juno sent it back,
And when Vulcan now is "scundered"
She must "Take another Tack."
Cupid stole it little rascal
And goes roaming o'er the earth
Seeking symmetry more perfect
Than was hers who gave him birth.
Over many lands he'd flitted,
Even Psyche passing by,
When a maiden's form amazed him,
And with ardor made him sigh.
She is picking daisies slowly,
By a pool of crystal clear, . "
And the picture in its waters
Would to Zeno bring a tear.
Cupid diving headlong in it,
Finds reflection is a "fake,"
But emerging near the daisies,
Learns the cause of his mistake.
Psyche, Venus, and the Graces,
With their beauties. all combined,
He was sure, could never rival
Such as now he saw outlined,
In persona, right before hin,
Of a "symphony in black"
'Twas too much for little Cupid ''
And he couldn't turn his back!
So, delighted to have found it,- "
Alter searching low and high.
He has tied the ribbon round it,
In the twinkling of an eye.
Then indeed, a strange thing happened!
But the reason here we find;
Just to get him back to heaven,
They were 'bliged to make him blind
Ever since, our dainty maiden, j
Out of kindness, as you see,
Has to wear her pretty dresses
Very far below the knee! ;j
For if Aphrodite's girdle
Should be visible to men,
There's no counting up the numbers
Would be broken-hearted then.
E'en a daisy who espied it, '
Watched it neatly put in place,
W as "right quickly" turned to silver,
'Cause he couldn't hide his face.
But his little heart's not hardened,
And it will not soon grow cold,
If he sometimes may be near her
With the ribbon blue enrolled.

The"General Grumbler"hasn't said
anything lately, because, for a won
der, he's seen nothing to grumble
about. Now, however, he has some
thing to say, and takes this method
of saying it. He went into Memori
al Hall the other day and there he
saw a lot of penciled foolishness,
arid several names written on the tab
lets there embedded in the wall.
Some one edidently knew he'd never
receive any recognition there except
that; and so he tried to make him
self notorous that way, What sort
of an animal is this that desecrates
the memorial tablets of men to
whose standard he can never attain?
Can't we cage it, or shoot it, or do
something else to get it out of the
way? The better spirits of our Un
iversity ought to down such things
and do it now. We've outgrown
the scribbling age, we hope, and if
we haven't, we ought to have sense
enough not to give way to that sort
of monomania.
There's another thing that struck
the "General Grumbler" the other
day as being unworthy of such an
institution as ours. He was walk
ing through the campus when all of
a sudden some one raised a cry which
was taken up by fifty other voices,
and the burden of that cry was,
"Angels in the campus!" Some
ladies were taking a walk through
the campus, and fifty students, with
out any provocation, took this very
delicate and polite way of welcom
ing them to our grounds. it is an
old and time honored custom, we
know, but, in the eyes of sensible
men, that doesn't make it any bet
ter. The "General Grumbler"
thinks this should be stopped. Its
neither manly, nor polite, to try to
embarrass our visitors this way. We
wouldn't do it in our . own . homes,,
and why should we do such things
at our temporary home where we
are supposed to come to represent
the life of the State in miniture? It
is directly opposed to the spirit of
the old Southern chivalry of which
we are so proud, and which we try
to maintain as best we can. The
custom can be stopped if the men
who disapprove it only have; the
backbone to show their disapproval.
Yours for grumbling,
"General Grumbler."
