PERSONAL. ' Mr. Jones Fuller returned from Ral eigh on Monday. Mr.Carmicliael returned from Greens boro Tuesday morning-. Mr. Stephens came back Tuesday to look after his business. . We are jrlad to note the recovery 0f Mr. Ed. Land, who was quite sick last week. The travelling saleman of Ro ers & McDowel has been in town for the past two days. Whv didn't that burglar take Sorrel's music box while he was at the business? Caps and powns have been finally adopted and will be the regular senior paraphernalia this year. An autograph letter of General R. E Lee has been added to the Library collection of historic relics. Rev. R. E. Caldwell, of the class of '79 is holding a series of lectures at the Presbyterian church. There is to be a debate in May between the Fresh and Soph. mem bers of the two literary societies. Dr. Hume delivered several lectures in Smithfield last week and as usual they were attended by 'large and ap preciative audiences. We regret to announce the death of Mr. Beckwith, of Washing-ton, N. C. He was a member of the Law School several years ago. Mr. John Cator, of Greensboro, will be here on the 18th, 19th, and 20th to show a handsome line of goods from C. M. Vanstory & Co. See "ad" at bottom of this column. The best debaters in the Pi. Society for the last two weeks were Messrs. W. S. Wilson and A. T. . Allen. The best debaters for the last two weeks in the Phi. were Messrs. J. D. Parker andE. L. Abbott. . The Winston Graded School has established a monthly known as "The Record. " It is published by the Senior Class and is a publica tion of which the school has just cause to be proud. The Southern Inter-collegiate De bate was lately held at Tulane Uni versitv. New Orleans. Most of the principal Southern institutions have entered, except the Uni versifies of Virginia and N. C. Fourth Faculty Lecture. Dr. Hume delivered his lecture on The Making of the English Bi ble" last night in Gerrard Hall. It was both entertaining and instruct ive throughout, and las.ted . about two hours. The Doctor is always welcomed by the boys as a lecturer, for all know his reputation in this" line both here and elsewhere. This lecture on the. Bible has been highly com plemented by several eminent schol ars, who have seen the notes in pro spective, and we may consider our selves fortunate in having had the opportunity to hear it. bo tar all these lectures have been great successes and have been "at tended by large audiences. It was a wise move on the faculty s part and we hooe it will be made a perma nent feature hereafter. ( ?' Mr. J. Webb, Jr., went to Hills- boro this morning. Mr. Sam Lamb, our literary edi tor, has been sick for several days. This is to celebrate the memory of the University Magazine, which died before it was born. A meeting of the Freshman Class was held last week for the purpose of raisins-some monev for the proposed Y. M. C. A. Building, and the sum of one hundred and eighty three dollars was subscribed. This is much less than has been given hv nrcviniis classes. The Class of '98 gave seventeen hundred and fif ty -dollars; '99 subscribed eleven hun dred and eiarhtv-five dollars.
