A Wonerful Invention Zoology teaches that the hairs of the head are hollow, and contain an oil thatgives them life. In clipping the hair with scis sors, this hollow is left open, and the hair loses its life-giving properties. ' I have a Machine named the Singeing Ma chine, which removes the hair and at the same time closes up the hollow, causing the tiair to retain its life-giving propertiesand therefore stopping the hair from falling out or dying, and giving it a soft growth.. Call and examine this machine and havc your hair singed. , - Special attention given to dressing In dies' hair. Cutting done with exquisite ano srtistis skill by the old University Harbor of twenty years' experience., The singing machine is highly recom mended by scientists throughout the country. Bridfiers, of Wil mington, has given as a memorial to her husband, the late Col. K. K. Bridge rs, a complete set of the National Cyclopoedia of American Biography. This work includes the names of many not mentioned in Appleton's. An index' in each to each volume to all the preceding- volumes , makes the references easy to find. Dr. Kemp P. Battle is one of tlie: contributors. Mrs. Bridgers has the thanks of iis all for si c i an acceptable and useful gift. . V Another biographical diction ary, of two volumes, the gift of Col. J. S. Carr, deals largely with men who have attained success in busi ness, rather than with authors, statesmen and politicians. In Amer ica's Successful Men, the names of Paul C. Cameron, J. S. Carr and Thos. M. Holt, from North Caro lina, are mentioned. . ' The Werner Company's gift of the supplement to the Encyclopae dia Britannica, four volumes of which have appeared, will supply much new matter not included in the original. This donation included a new edition of a Guide to Syste matic Reading in the Encyclopedia Britannica, which may . truly be called a key to theOBritannica. In it specific references following prop er introductory remarks, are given to various subjects in the Britanni ca, such as Readings for Young Peoole. Reading in Science, Philos ophy,; History, Mythology, etc., Readings for the Teacher, the Law yer, the Physician, the Farmer, the Geologist, the Chemist, the Public Speaker, etc, Circular letters are being sent out asking for donations of histori cal and biographical pamphlets, etc, relating to the history of N. C. ri'r.d the South, and quite a nice collec tion is expected as a result. The following accessions to the library may be mentioned: Marley's English Writers, 3 yojs. Saiutsbury's The Flourishing of a Comedy, Dictionary of . National Biographies, vol. 50, Merredith.s Essays on Comedy. Quite a num- bar of bound periodicals have been added.
