McCormick was elected secretary to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Smith. Mr. P. D. Gold presented a paper on the "Life and Character of Gen Louis D. Wilson." who was born in Edgecombe county, N. C. in 1784 and died in Mexico in 1847. Wilson was several times elected to the General Assembly and was at one time presi dent of the Senate, and was a member of the convention of 1835. It was shown that he was the 'first North Carolinian to offer his services to the g-overnor in the war with Mex ico, and was afterwards appointed colonel of a regiment of infantry by the President of the United States, He did not serve in active battle as he died soon after the army left Vera Cruz. His remains were brought to Goldsboro, N. C, where a monument has been erected to his memory. 'The county and town of Wilson, N. C, were named in his honor, I Dr. Battle read a paper on the "First Two Years of the Dialectic and Phil anthropic Society." 'The first society was inaugurated on motion of Charles W. Harris, June 3, 1795, and the name given to it was the "Debating Society." The objects of this society were expressed to be the "cultivation of a lasting 'friend ship, and the promotion of useful knowledge." Some of the laws and portions of the constitution were read and shown to have been much too strict to be tolerated in this genera tion. The meetings were held on Thursdays. The first motion made after the admission of members was one providing for the purchase of some books. The first query discussed was "Is the the study of classics benefi cial?" The first debater was James Mebane, who was answered by Robert Smith.
