We hope to see real enthusiasm manifested in this course, and feel sure that satisfactory results will be forth coming. Sophomore Election. The Sophomore class met Satur day afternoon to elect officers. It was a disorderly crowd, and a policeman was needed more than iA I I 1 1 a I 1 i once. rome plan snouiq ne tnougnt of for preserving order and prevent ing breaches of the peace in the tur bulent class elections. The root of the disturbances in them is a blind and unreasonable factious spirit which ought, for the good of the University and the sake of decency, to be destroyed forth-with. By its attitude toward such a spirit in in dividuals, the student body could kill it. It ought not to be allowed to thrive in the air of a University, among men broad-minded and sen sible, and the individuals who seek to excite it should not be tolerat ed. ' ' At the election which, by its row dyism, furnished the text for the above, the following officers were elected: President, R.R.Williams. 1st. Vice Pres.. D. P. Stern. 2nd. Vice Pres., H. M. Robins. Secretary, Treasurer, Essayist, Orator, Statistician, Poet, Prophet, Historian, D. C. Ballard. J. E. Swain. R. S. Merritt. W. B. Owen. J. S. Gibson. A. Kerly. H. P. Stevens. G. V.Roberts. The Class In Expression. The action of the Trustees last Commencement in deciding to have a permanent course given in elocu- ion throughout the year was hailed as an act of wisdom. They were also fortunate in procuring to fill he place, the same mart who, served us so well for more than two months last spring, Mr. .McKie. For the past two years it has been the custom to have an expression teacher .here only part of the spring term. Although great good was accomplished in this way. et the short time available for general class work and preliminary training prevented ... the ""'best;'": results from being obtained. But now that we have a course extending through he whole year this draw-back need not trouble us any more. Mr. McKie has organized his class and gone to work to make it a suc cess. About 40 have joined the class, which is divided into five sec tion , each meeting once a week; the whole class comes together once in two weeks for a general lesson. Now, .let not the members of the class grow indifferent, because it is not a required study. We can and should get just as much out of it as JAMES SPRUNT MONOGRAPHS.
