EHsha Mitchell Society Meets.
The regular monthly meeting-of
the Elisha Mitchell Scientific So
ciety and the 123rd session of that
bodv was called to order by the
President in Person Hall last Tues
day night. The only paper read
before the Society was an excellent
and carefully prepared one by Maj
or Cain on "Strategy of Jackson's
Campaign in the Valley of Vir
giniu." With, the aid of a small
map of the valley Prof. Cain gave
a very vivid and impressive de
scriotion of Jackson's brilliant
strategic work and the untiring" and
dominating" energy that governed
his . everv movement. Jackson's
reputation is today higher than ev
er and he is ranked as one of the
greatest military geniuses of the
world.
He spoke on the character of
Jackson and Lee and declared that
they had the entire confidence of
the troops under their command.
He gave the principles of war as
defined by great commanders and
showed how thoroughly Jackson
obeyed every principle. Jackson s
great point was mystery, that is
always surprising his enemy.
The battle 0f Manassa was where
Jackson first made his reputation.
He grave the number of troops and
location at different times during
the war and showed that the Con
federates had only 50,000 men
while the enemy had 218,000.
In the Valley Campaign Jackson
marched 676 miles in 48 days and
fought 9 battles.
In March '65 there were over
200,000 men, ready to advance on
Richmond and only 50,000 Confed
erates there to defend it.
Professor Cain gave many inci
dents and occurrences and showed
how truly great was Jackson as a
warrior and leader. The paper
was very enjoyable and a large
crowd listened to it.
University Alumni.
Wake County Association Meets.
The following clipped from the
News and Observer shows that the
Alumni of Wake Connty are awake
to the importance of the assistanae
that an alumni association is able to
render the Univerity and The Tar
Heet trusts that similar organiza
tion will be at once perfected .in
every county in the state.
The Wake County Association of
the Alumni of the University of
North Carolina, met last night in
the Supreme court building. R. H.
Battle was called to the chair, and
Robt. L, Gray requested to act as
secretary, and was reorganized by
selecting" Joseph B. Batchelor as
president and W. Peele as secretary.
The substance of the plan of organ
ization is intended to locate the men
now living who have been students
at the University, and to classsify
them by geographical group (towns
counties and states): to encourage
the formation of local associations
with definite aims, to be outlined in
local by-laws, as awarding alumni
scholarships, keeping the general
secretary at Chapel Hill informed as
to the movements of the Alumni
within their divisions, and keeping
the members in touch with the af
fairs of the institution: and to or
ganize a generl association of the
Alumni to which local associations
will send delegates, at such times
and places of meeting as may be
convenient and desirable. The sec
retary of each local association will
be requested to foward a complete
list of men in his locality, who have
been Chapel Hill students, to the
general secretary at the "Hill,"
and from time to time inform him
of any changes of residence.
A committee was appointed to
draft by-laws for the local associ
ation, who will report to a subse
quent meeting.
Those Who have been students of
the institution will very much de
crease the labours of Mr, Peele, the
Secretary, by sending him their
full names and the class to which
they belonged.
Mrs. Baskerville has returned
from Raleigh where she spent the
holidays.
Poughkeepsie has been chosen by
the Southern Intercollegiate Row
ing Association, as the scene of the
regatta next spring. Harvard and
Yale will as usual row at New J
London.
