Ass't Business Man Published every Saturday by the General ' Athletic Association.! r Entered in the Postoffice at Chapel Hill, N. C, as second-class matter. ' Subscription Price. $1.50 per Year. Payable in advance or during- first term. Single Copies, 5 Cents. All communications for this paper should be in the hands of the Editor-in-Chief by Wednesday at noon to insure publication the same week; We shall be glad to publish pertinent discussions of college topics. 1 The Tar Heel will welcome news items, and hopes the whole college will aid it alongthis line. ! We wish to call the attention of the students to the rules and regu lations governing the Library Reading- Course Prizes, which we publish in this issue, and to urge them to give this plan the consideration and attention which its importance de mands. This is indeed an opportu nity which all, who can, should avail themselves of. This scheme has met with the approval of severa members of the Faculty of the State Normal College and has, this year been put into effect at the Univer sity of Georgia. . Now, it is useless to urge the im portance of reading. Every one is going to read something; every one must read who lays any claims whatever to scholarship and culture. or who wishes to keep himself in formed as to current events. But this reading is generally done in desultory way; yet it has its : value and this value is great. ' How infi nitely more valuable it would be i done systematically along well-de nned lines witn a definite purpose in view. Now, the purpose of this plan, in addition to encouraging and stimulating the reading habit, is to give the student an opportunity o doing this sort of reading. And herein lies the great value of the scheme. "- The courses have ' been marked out by men who know what is the best reading to supplement the work of the regular college course; Yet these courses are so broad and ; varied as to be in viting alike to every student whether his tendencies be towards literature,, science, art or philosophy. Who can doubt the culture of such a pian? Again let us urge every bne who cafes to give this matter due consideration and to avail himself of the rare opportunity here offered. the work may not be delayed. The editors are enthusiastic in this. work and are laboring with determined effort te make the Yackety Yack of 1903 the best annual ever gotten out from this University. Many new ie.itures nave already been in troduced, and others may yet be suggested. With the right sort of support there is no reason why the editors should not succeed in their undertaking. Let everyone do his best during the few days now re maining before the book eoes to press. :v? . The Virginia tennis club has sent a challenge to the tennis association of this place for a match to be play ed in Charlottesville at the time of the baseball game there. - The ten nis association here is being or ganized, and a tournament is being arranged for, to take place some time in March. The challenge from Virginia is still under consideration. All tennis players are urged to join the association and enter the tourna men t at once A further notice of the tournament will appear later. Work on the Yackety Yack is progressing very well, tho' the ed itors are still in need of more fiction, poetry, drawings, jokes and drags. They hope to have the book ready for press early, in February. All those therefore, who expect to con tribute anything for this annual are requested to submit their produc tions just as soon as possible so that The Tar Heel was in error last week in saying. Dr. George Depeu Hadzsits would take Dr. Linscott's place in the Department of Latin. We take pleasure in correcting the statement by saying Dr. T. J. Wil son, Jr., will be at the head of this department and that Dr. Hadzsits has beensecured by the President to assist Dr. Wilson. We hope his stay among us may be pleasant .and that he may be a valuable addition to the department. Don't Use Big Words. In promulgating your esoteric cogitations and in articulating your superficial sentimentalities and ami cable philosophical or psycholog ical observations beware of platitu dinous ponderosity. Let your con versational communications possess an exceptionally clarified conscious ness, a compacted comprehensible- ness, a coalescent consistency and a concatenated cogency. Eschew all conglomerations or flatulent garrulity, jejune babblement and asinine anectations. lver your ex temporaneous decantings and un premeditated expatiations have in telligible and veracious vivacity without rhodomontade or thrason ical bombast. Sedulously avoid a polysyllabic profundity, pompous prolixity, psittaceous vacuity, ven triloquial verbosity and vaniloquem vapidity. Shun double ententes prurient jocosity and pestiferous profanity, obscurant or apparent. In other words, talk plainly, brief ly, naturally, sensibly, purely and truthfully. Keep from slang; do not put on airs; say what you mean; i i ' L .... i ' 1 , . mean wnat you say ana aon t use big words. Ex. THE CAROLINA CLOTHING CO. Cha rlotte, 3ST.
