The-Historical Society met in the History room Monday evening at seven thirty. The meeting- was well attended- by the members of the .Society and students of the University. : Talks were made by DrsJ Battle and Raper and Mr. Sawyer. Dr. Battle spoke o "Slavery in North Carolina Just Prior to and During- the Civil War. " He spoke of the kind treatment of the slaves who did not' try to rise against the women and children. He spoke of legislation in North Carolina concerning" slaves before the war, and the friendlv relations between the whites and the nesrroe Dr. Raper ; spoke on "The Influ ence of Quakers on Slavery in Mid dleNorth Carolina." He discussec briefly the anti-slavery mbvemen in iNortn Carolina, particularly among- the Uuakers ot Uuiltord county, i Dr; Raper's address was exceedingly interesting- and instruc tive. Mr. E. L. Sawyer made the third and last address and gave some bi ographical sketches of some of the North Carolina members of the Confederate Congress. Mr. Saw yer's address was verv entertain ng-.
