RICHMOND COLLEGE DEFEATED
BY THE SCORE OF SEVENTEEN
TO TWELVE
Carolina Had an Off Day-Richmond
College Scored Twice by
Trick Plays
Carolina defeated Richmond Col
lege on the local gridiron Saturday
afternoon by the score 17 to 12 in a
game full of unexpected turns and
replete with spectacular plays.
The Spiders (and richly they de
serve that name) kept the Carolina
players guessing from the start
and by their multitudinous trick
plays made the outcome uncertain
till the end. The score was disap
pointing from the Carolina point
of view. Washington and Lee de
feated Richmond College by the
score of 31 to 6, and Carolina tied
Washington and Lee. Though the
score indicates an off day yet every
man figured in one or more spectac
ular plays. Individually the Car
olina players were a constellation
of stars but collectively they were
simply bewildered by the unfath
omable maze of intricate plays that
the Richmond boys executed in
rapid succession. In trying to
solve the mystery the team simply
groped about in the dark and before
the light broke the ball had crossed
the goal Hue twice. Carolina
made her three touchdowns by
straight football coupled with sev
eral finely, executed foward passes.
For Carolina Tillett at quarter
was the scintillating meteor. More
than once his tackling saved the!
day for Carolina at critical stages
of the game and his running back of
punts was exceptionally good.
Captain Thomas punted well, once
lifting the pigskin far over the
Richmond quarter's head. Ruffin
made substantial gains around the
ends and through the line. Kelly
was injured early during the game
but played a hard game. Belden,
who replaced him, made several
brilliant dashes, one of which
amounted to thirty-five yards. The
ends, Wiggins and Manning, played
excellent ball and figured in several
forward passes that netted long
gains. Garrett was very strong
on running back the ball on the
kick-off and his interference was
good. Yet however spectacular
many individual plays were, the
fact remians that the whole team
was simply bewildered by the wiles
of the Richmond boys.
For Richmond College, Saunders,
Meredith, Chambers and Ransom
starred, while every player had
something unexpected up his sleeve.
The game iu detail:
In the first half Carolina kicked
off to Richmond College, Chambers
returning the ball ten yards. After
an unsuccessful line buck Lang ford
punted 40 yards to Ruffin who re
turned five yards. A forward pass
failed and Tillet kicked 40 yards to
Langford who came back 5 yards.
-Saunders gained 15 on forward pass.
Langford no gain. Wiggins se
cured fumbled ball and made 4
yards, Kelly 2, and Ruffin 4. Mere
dith got onside kick on 15 yard line.
He made 4 yards on end run. Man
ning fell on fumbled ball. Carolina
failed to gain aud Thomas tried for
ward pass but it failed and ball
went to Richmond College on the
12 yard line. 'Langford and Mere
dith plunged the line for good gains.
A forward pass failed and Cham
bers punted to Tillett who returned
10 yards. After several terrific line
bucks Ruffin plunged the line for
a touchdown and Thomas kicked
the goal.
Langford kicked to Garrett who
returned 20 yards. Wiggins made
20 yards on forward pass. Meredith
got ball on fumble. A fake play,
line plays, forward pass and a
fake play netted Richmond College
a touchdown, Langford carrying
the ball over and Chambers kicking
goal. Score. N; C. 6, R. C 6. Thom
as kicked to Langford on 2 yard
line. Ball returned 10 yards. Caro
lina gets ball and gains 20 yards
on forward pass and on another
Manning goes over for touchdown.
Thomas failed to kick goal. After
three more minutes of play half up.
Score: Carolina LI, R. C. 6.
In second half Richmon College
quickly made a touchdown by for
ward pass, trick plays by Saunders
and Stringfellow. Chambers kicked
goal. Carolina then took a brace up
and Williams made 40 yards on for
ward pass' aud Belden went over
for a touchdown. Thomas kicked
goal. No more scoring was done
and the game ended with the ball
on Richmond College's 10 yard line.
Final score: Carolina 17, Richmond
College 12.

The V. P. I. Game Saturday.
The Varsity leaves Friday after
noon for Richmond where it meets
Saturday afternoon the formidable
eleven of the Virgina Polytechnic In
stitute. The "Tech" team is con
fident of taking the Tar Heel boys
into camp. This confidence is based
on comparative scores. Washington
& Lee tied Carolina, V, P. I. defeated
Washington & Lee by the score of IS
to 4. V. P. I. also held Princeton to
the score of 10 to 4. Carolina has de
feated V. P. I. but once in the last
several years. Last year V. P. I.
won by the score of 24 to 6. Captain
Thomas, Manager Gray, and Coach
Greene have no predictions to make
but say with the men that Carolina
means to fight to the end.
SCRUBS LOST BOTH GAMES
AT ASHEV1LLE LAST SATURDAY
AND MONDAY
Bingham Won the First Game and
Asheville School, the Second
Scrubs Unable to Score
The "scrubs" returned Tuesday
from Asheville where they played
Bingham School Saturday and
Asheville School Monday. The
first game resulted in a victory for
Bingham by a score of eleven to
nothing. Asheville School had a
much stronger team than Bingham
anq rolled up 24 points on the
'scrubs."
The first game was not a good
exhibition of foot ball. Both sides
fumbled frequently and the play on
the whole .was ragged. The
'Scrubs" kicked off to Bingham at
the beginning of the game. Koon
fumbled and a "scrub" recovered
the ball. Two attempts at the
Hue failed and then a forward pass
was unsuccessful. Koon punted
and Bingham recovered the ball.
Norton on an end run carried the
ball to the "Scrubs" 5-yard line,
but Bingham could gain only 2 1-2
yards in three downs and the ball
went over. The "Scrubs" punted
out, and Bingham tried a drop-kick
which failed. Shortly afterwards
Bingham punted from the "Scrubs"
40-yard line. By this time the
spectators had crowded upon the
field, and the ball fell in a group of
them. In the scramble for the ball
a Bingham player seized it and
carried it over tor a .touchdown.
The score was protested, because
of the fact that an agreement had
been made that if the spectators
came upon the field the Bingham
team was to be penalized. The
officials ruled the touchdown legal,
and McGee kicked goal. The rest
of this half the ball see-sawed up
and down the field. Just before
the half was over McGee, Bing
ham's star quarter-back, was bad
ly injured.
In the second half neither side could
gain consist ently, so a great deal of
punting , was resorted to. In this de
partment of the game Koon of
Biugham excelled and Bingham
gained about 25 yards on every ex
change. Bingham's second touch
down came when a punt was
was blocked on the '"Scrubs" 5-yard
line. The ball bounded back
across the goal and a Bingham man
fell on the ball.
For Bingham, McGee, Norton,
and Koon played the best game,
while Lambeth at left-end and
Hedgpeth at full-back were the
stars for the scrubs.
The game with Asheville School
on Monday vvaa a clean contest all
the way through. The Scrubs
won the toss, and kicked off to
Asheville School. By a series of
line plunges and well-executed for
ward passes Asheville worked the
ball well into the Scrubs' territory,

CAROLINA BLANKS GUILFORD
IN THE FIRST TENNIS GAME OF
SEASON
Fountain and Hyman Won Both the
Doubles and the Singles at
Guilford Saturday
The 'Varsity Tennis team defeat
ed the Guilford team last Saturday
afternoon. A good-sized crowd of
Guilford students were on hand to
cheer the Guilford team to victory
but despite even the favoring eyes
of the young ladies, the Carolina
team won both the singles and the
doubles. G. M. Fountain and O.
W. Hyman represented Carolina;
Vance and Hine, Guilford.
Although the score was 100 to 0
yet the games were all well con
tested especially in the opening set
of each series. The Guilford men
played an excellent but rather old
style game. The Guilford men
did not play the consistently steady
game of their opponents and their
bids to score were only spasmodic.
The scores were as follows:
Doubles:
Carolina 6 6
Guilford 4 3
Singles; .. -.
Fountain 6 6
Hine 3 0
Hyman 7 6
Vance 5 1

Tennis Matches with Davidson
and Wake Forest.
Carolina and Davidson will meet
in tennis matches here the twelfth
and thirteenth of November. The
Davidson team has not played an
inter-collegiate match this fall but
it is reported that the Davidson
team is one of the best in the state.
Messrs. Fountain and Hyman, how
ever, are anxious to meet the Pres
byterians and retrieve the tie game
in Wilmington. Next Friday Car
olina aud Wake Forest play at
Wake Forest. Wake Forest has
always had a strong tennis team.
Last year Messrst Fountain and
Orr in a close match defeated
Messrs. Poteat and EJrnshaw, who
held for Wake Forest the inter
collegiate championship of the
South. Mr. Ernshaw is again a
member of the Wake Forest team.
The Wake Forest game will be a
hard one
