Elsewhere in this issue is printed a letter from a member of the Sophomore class concerning the editorial in last week's Tar Hkex, on the shooting affair which oc curred the night of the sopho more banquet. The writer of the letter is open and fair in his crit icism of the editorial. He fur nishes an example, the editor may say in passing, that might well be followed by certain mem bers of some of the other classes in this University. The editor still holds to his views expressed last week. He does not say nor has he ever said that the sophomore class as a whole was guilty of the crime committed. He does, however, say that the Sophomore class as a whole, and that every member of it, is responsible for its good name in the University. Certain mem bers of the class have dishonored the class. The duty and respon sibility now rests on the Sopho more class as a whole to find out who these guilty ones are, to do everything in its power to aid the authorities in discovering them. The Sophomores know more about this affair than anybody else, yet not one of them has turned a hand to help discover the guilty ones. And until the Sophomore class does do this it must as a class endure the stain put on it, and must be held re sponsible for the entire affair. With regard to the writer's face tious reference to Adam, the ed itor would like to say that al though he may be revolutionary in some of his ideas, he is still enough of a believer in the ortho dox teachings of his youth to know that the religious history of the human race has been one con tinuous prayer for deliverance and absolution from the sins of Adam. The race has not been guilty of Adam's sins, but it has suffered for them and has had to expiate them. The Sophomore class is not guilty of the crimes of some of its barbarian members, but it must suffer for them and must expiate them. And this last and final word: The Sophomore class has become far more indignant at the criticism passed on it by a single individual tn the University than it did at the outrageous and inhuman conduct of "some of its members." Negotiations are under way for a track meet between Minne sota and Missouri. CAROLINA WINS THE FIRST GAME Continued from First Page. catch the throw from Whitaker, the other a complete miss of an easy ball to pitcher. Swink caught a fine game. He worked hard from start to finish. The prep school team likewise fielded well. Second base seemed a lime weak, Dtit in oilier re spects the infield was well bal anced. Besides striking out seven men the pitcher accepted five fielding chances without a fum ble. , The results of the game cannot be taken to indicate much. The game was played solely aR practice gamev The team showed up woefully weak at the bat, but not much more could be expected from the first appearance of the team before" a good pitcher who used everything he had. The team's defense was excellent, its offense will strengthened as the season comes on. The battery candidates have had good prac tice, but the batters have had but ittle chance to improve their batting eye. The tabulated score and sum mary is given below: Tabulated Score CAROLINA R. " ' "" Mydbar Mr. editor: , - In your just arraignment in the last issue of the Tar Heel, of the sophomores who shot up Packard's Annex, you made the statement that "the only fit place for them is the Criminal Insane ward at the Pen." . As the only representative in the University of that dignified institution, I deem myself called upon to say, in its behalf, that no such cowardly persons are de sired at the State Prison. Only brave men who would think it a stain on their honor, to run from their guards, or conduct them selves in any other unseenly man ner, are allowed to remain there. The,rest have long since been shot in the back. If however, you must have a place for your sophomoric male factors, I refer you to the Hos pital for the Insane at Goklsboro. represented here by Mr. Paul Bryan. Respectfully Yours, J. P Fenner, !
