THE CURTAIN FALLS As the curtain goes down on the first act we glance back over the events of the term. We have enjoyed the work of getting doing this different kinds of athletics after they come here. This is an immense handicap to us since the larger teams that we play draw from their prep schools men already trained in athletics. To overcome our handicap the Council advances the scheme of high school traning in athletics in the sta te. The plan is to get some loyal alumnus of tne Uni versity to give a few hours each weoK in the afternoon to coach ing- the football team or the high school in his town. By tne men whom we of time. But while that is going on we shall abstain from over maliciousness. We are not feel ing malicious anyway. The senior smoker Friday msrht not evening, for it is night here the senior smoker then not us to feeling good towards .every body we went away from it with one of those iovful feelings that make us re-evolute to that state in nature where we desire to sing a primitive state instance. But anyhow felt good. Then Saturday night we went to the Socierv smoker and left there with another good feeling. By that lime our heart was feeling as large as the proverbal slightly inerbrated gentleman "just lit up a bit to show that he was human" said that his was, that he had a heart in him as bier as a mule. In some things we ma have rubbed the tur tne wrong way for some people, in many places we have knocked when we would have boosted; but always we have done what we thought the larger interest de manded. After the holidays we shall continue the same course CN A GCCD TERM In many respects this has been the best term since, clad in the scanty clothes of youthfu lSfnorauce, we enter.d upon the life of the University com niunity. This vear our weak ness has been the cause of strength, and from ' our bad has sprung- up a new -rood. This fall the student -'-body has been together, as never before, and the students have felt with a hither to unawakened spirit that their's is a common interest. Tliis Jechng has given expression to itself in the form of a new insti- , tution class and society smokers. They are an endeavor to get together, and are good. There is, though one danger in connec tionwith them, and that is that they be abused. They are liable to follow the cc rses of individualism and punning and run to seed immaturely; or their novelty may add too much in flammabihty and allow them to burn themselves out before their time. They are fine but delicate things, and as such must be guarded jealously and used with discretion. A SPECIFIC INSTANCE Among the steps in the right direction here this fall was that of the Student Ccuncil when it entered upon a wider field of activity and assumed a new dignity and place in the Univer sity life. It has become a Greater University Council, and is striving to bring together in every way the uinerent pam we begin to derive much benefit from it. This is the one serious drawback to it. since it is a com mon human failing to desire to see immediate effects and not to want to do anything that will bring in benefits farther off than the ends of our noses. But despite this chronic affectation of the race the plan is a good one. lhe trouble will come in, though, in getting "loya alumni" to coach the teams Not many of them have the time cut n tne senior(ciass eacn year could receive good coaching in the game there would be enough good teachers going out into the state each year with footbal training- to coach every team in the state. IN THE MEANTIME We have a good captain ; for the team. Big Ab "has won the respect and admiration of the entire studen t body by his untir ing- work and dogged fig-ht. He never lets up. vyhen the rest of the team slumps youcan always et on him as being there and opening up a hole through his tackle. We are glad to see him captain and extend to him the tearty best wishes of the Univer sity. Captain, we wish tor you many happy returns from the games. OUR WISHES Now as we see before us the ruddy glow of the open fire God's first blessing, and catch the odor of good things from the pantry intended for bad little boys iust back' from college, as we can almost feel ourselves strolling along on a clear frost v day by the side of a set of furs from whose depths peeps a bright vivacious face we cannot refrain from exclaiming with Tiny Tim "God bless us every one," and adding "A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-day." KEAKING CONCLUSION JNow that t he days draw near to the holidays and we glimpse in our dreams the festive board spread for the home-come prodv gal we begin to feet the Yuletide spirit in our bones. Not even the ridiculosities of Pickwickian affairs nor the freshness of the torpedo throwers can entirely take away our good spirits; for we see in them the same spirit of joy that perambulates through our frame, only they are still in the primitive state where the savage can only give expression to his happiness by making a 'Big Noise." But as time casts his lengthening shadows upon heir advancing years they will pf the college life, relate them, continue in the j-rocess of their Royal Borden Furniture Co.
