F. W. FOISTER, KODAK FINISHING m J am ' 1 3 c PLATO DURHAM Preaches a Powerful Univer sity Sermon Rev. Plato Durham, D. D., of Winston-Salem, preached the third University sermon of the year in Gerrard Hall Sunday, December 15. In this sermon Mr. Durham delivered a very forceful and effective utterance. In Hebrews 1:1-2 is found his text: "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in times past unto the proph ets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds." Progressively has God seen fit to move in his mys terious order into the life and being of man. The process of knowing what is the finality of God is spiritual. Both revela tion and science teach us that he began in the far twilight of exis tence in a progressive order. Historically as his first word to man God spread out his physi cal universe. He made every leaf of the forest, every flower of the field a symbol of his being. Out of this, man came to get some idea of God and of his mie-ht: but as man moved a higher message and idea of God was needed. Through the law at Sinai God then spoke to him. With this man gave himself more largely to the worship of God. God's next revelation came through the prophets. Hosea spoke to the world of the tender ness of. God. God touched the golden tougue of Isaiah and bade him speak, and lo! there tlowed out to the sea of mankind the mightiest message man ever spake. As man moved higher, how ever, as his heart was enlarged, he demanded God in some higher form, in the Incarnation a theo logical mystery inexplicable by the human mind. Yet. if we may not understand this fine process, he of us who looks into the heart of the master knows in his mind that he is our "My Lord and my God." The process of the Incarnation is the process of this world. The process of Incarnation began but did not end in the life of Jesus. We are intendeded, as his fol lowers, to be jusf as near an in carnate soul of Jesus as Jesus was the incarnate life of God. We, every man of us, possesses in our lives the power to show forth in us the life and spirit of our God. And God hath ordained it so that, if the soul of Jesus dwell in us, it gives us u.l but an omnipotent force over the life of men: . But do we, we who are Chris ttan men incarnate that spirit of Jesus in our lives? In order to intelligently answer this, let us put ourselves to these tests: Have we the marks of Jesus, in our hearts? There is one of the works of Jesus as man can ever doubt: our Master's heart broke in the presence of sin. To him sin was such an awful tragedy that he was willing to lay down his life against it. Can we, who have some love hidden somewhere in us, can we stand in the presence of ihf. test? There are men who do it men whose laces sliinel like beacons in the night. There is one othr test: Do we love God? Do we love him so that we would lay down our lives in Hs service? Jesus loved man. This has been upon the lips of man so long that it has' become a platitude But the love for human kind is the finest thing in this world. There are men who have this love in thier hearts is it ours? Todav in the presence of men who have shown that the Incar nation is not a phiiosophy, not a miracle to be seen by the eye, bnt the spirit of God working in their lives, shall not each of us cry. "O spirit of Jesus, dwell in me, dwell in me; let my heart flash his life, as your's flashes God's life."
