TAR HEEL Weather Report i Keep up the good work, team, Weather Report t We're ail with you. OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA VOL. 23 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, CHAPEL HILL, N. C, THURSDAY. NOVEMBER ?19, 1914 NO CAROLINA CONQUERS FORMER COACHES COMING REAL TREAT AHEAD FINANCIAL STANDING OF ATHLETIC k THE Wake Forest Gives Tar Heels Trouble WEATHER CONDITIONS BAD Cciabatiag Teams Slip and Slide Through Mud and Water At Raleigh, Saturday, with Tandy, Home wood, and Capt. Tayloe out of the game, Carolina defeated Wake Forest 127. The Tar Heels started off too easy, thinking they had a walk over. Hut Wake Forest came out for trouble, evidently with the intention of crippling some body. In this, however, they failed, with the exception of two of their own men, who had to be carried off the field. Not a Car olina man was injured. Seem ingly, in the first half." Wake For est took advantage of the situ ation and by two forward passes made a ring aroung the heavy team in the mud, and netted about forty yards, which brought them on . Carolina's 15 yard line. Line plunges carried the ball over. But the old Carolina spirit survived, and the team's usual comeback succeeded in keeping the ball from getting seriously near Carolina's goal during the remainder of the game. Again Carolina played nothing but straight football, for it began to ram and the ball was too wet for forward passes to be manipu lated. Of course, no new plays were tried. On the offense Car olina's line bucking did some good work, but the punting of Foust probably aided more than any one factor. He completely outclassed the Wake Forest pun Continued on Third Page Pendleton and Wilson Will Coach Team on Lats ; Lap. Wednesday afternoon Coach Treuchard cousulted with a small group of students, and the result of the conference was that an agreement was made to raise by subscription a fund of two hundred- and fifty dollars foi the purpose of paying the expenses of Tol Pendleton and Tom Wil son, last year's coaches, for the last week's coaching before the Virginia game. It was also de cided to use a part of this money to pay half of Dave Tayloe's and George Tandy's expenses to Philadelphia to see Virginia play Swarthmore. Needless to say, the money for such a cause was raised with dispatch. Pendleton and Wilson are here and Tandy and Tayloe saw Virginia in ac tion. Each of the academic fra ternities gave ten dollars apiece, and the rest of the money was collected by canvassing the dor mitories. The results of this move will be inestimable. Wilson has been coaching the line at Wisconsin this fall, and Pendleton has been helping at Princeton for the last few weeks. What the Tar Heel squad won't know about football when these five men, Trenchard, Bluethenthal, Cunningham, Wil son, and Pendleton, plus some of the alumni, get through with them won't be worth knowing. The Univirsity is also to be con gratulated on securitrg Quarter back Emmons as a coach, Em mons starred two years on the Princeton team and is a shark on all kinds of football affairs. Search where you will, that coaching scaff cannot be beaten, neither can the team that they will turn out. Rendition of Strauss Music to Enoch Arden MUSIC LOVERS, ATTENTION Tennyson's Famous Poem to be Rendered With Music of Great German Composer. Subscribe to the Tar Heel. A musical treat is in store for the students. In response to numerous requests Mrs. Winston and Professor Bernard have con sented to repeat their rendition of the Strauss Music to Tenny son's "Enoch Arden." This ren dition was given for the first time before the members of the Community Club, as the Strauss Evening on the Club's program. It was a brilliant success. It will be given again on the evening of Monday, November 23rd, at half past seven, in the Presbyterian church. All interested will be welcome. A word as to the composer and this particular work of his. It is difficult to explain the signifi cance of Strauss in the develop ment of modern music. His ad herents think of him as the giant who "liberated" musicjfrom Wag ner. In this way: When Wag ner composed an opera, he ex pressed in music the emotions that accompany the thought or the action of a story that was al ready in existence; when Strauss composes a "tone poem", he ex presses the thought or the action itself. His music needs no lib retto. At least, Strauss's adhe rents' claim this for him. : This is a bold claim; but Strauss is the boldest of compos (Continued on third page.) i Shows Reduction of Debt by About $50G.
