C, SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1916 NO. 25 THE GARDNER HUDSON TO REPRESENT CAROLINA Wins in Peace Prize Ora tion Preliminaries Last Monday night in the pre liminaries for the Peace Contest Gardner Hudson of Smithfield won first place by a unanimous decision of the-judges. His sub ject was "The Development of the International Mind." Although the decision of the judges was unanimous, the con test was by no means one-sided. John Stell with a good speech on "Practical Peace" crossed the tape second. The others who were in the contest aud who m'ade things quite interesting for the first two men were Virginius Williams, Frank Auld, Henry Mock, Marion Ross, aud William Marlowe. Gardner Hudson will go to Ral eigh to compete with representa tives from other slate colleges, aud the winner in this contest will be sent to represent the state in a national contest. , - GOO SCHOOLS WILL DEBATE In the State High School Contest on Navy Enlargement Triangular debates throughout the state occur Friday March 31, which is the 4th anniversary of High School Debating Union contests. At this time the query: "Resolved, That the U.S. should adopt the policy of greatly en larging its Navy" will be debated in more than 300 schools in 94 counties of the state. This is the largest contest of the Union that has been staged thus far. The total estimated audiences will be 75,000. Buncombe coun ty will have 14 schools debating on March 31. Robeson 12, Meck lenburg 11, Guilford 10, Ala mance 9, Johnston, Nashe, Wake and Durham 7 each, Gaston, Ire dell, Union Sampson, Rowan, Wafren have 6 each. The final contest for the Aycock Cup will be held in Chapel Hill on April 13 and 14. Alumni Review Out The March issue of the Alumni Review appeared on the campus today and carries an interesting article on "Our Campus" by Prof. W. C. Coker, Besides a chal lenge to the citizens of the state to give financial help to the Uni versity News Letter, there are articles on "The McNair Lec tures" and "Athletics at the Uni versity." s Dan Bell, of the law school '15 has gone to New York where he is attending the annual Tri Province Sigma Chi convention held there March 23-25. Sunday V. M. C. A. CAROLINA DOWNS ELON Shows Great Improvement and Wins 18 to 4 Carolina defeated Elon Satur day by the score of 18 to 4 in a game which lasted for two and a half hours. Carolina's playing showed a considerable improve ment over that against Oak Ridge. Currie started the pitch ing, but soon gave way to Powell, who finished the game without being scored on. Bennett caught a good game and incidental ly slammed out a three bagger with the bases loaded. The Carolina team was far superior to Elon's for the fifteen men used by Caro lina made two errors to Elon'sl seven. The hitting of Bailey, Zollicoffer, Bennett, and Powell was of material aid in piling up Carolina's 18 runs. The playing of Bailey and the pitching aud hitting of Powell were features of the game. An Apology The Tar Heel regrets to state that in its write-up of the Elisha Mitchell Society Meeting last week mention of the speeches of Dr. Pratt and Dr. Battle was omitted. On account of limited space the last two paragraphs of the article were out, and these were the ones that contained the omitted speeches. Afternoon "The Human Factor in Industry" Solo by CAROLINA CHOOSES TRIANGULAR DEBATERS Bradshaw and Ruffin, Edney and Crouse Are Picked Messrs. F. F. Bradshaw and Tom Ruffin were chosen Wednes day night to represent the affirm ative lor Carolina in the triangu lar debate, while Messrs. C. R. Edney and R. F. Crouse were named for the negative side. The question wasj "Resolved, That the Federal y Government should compel all j able bodied men, between the ages of 18 and 24, under adequate provision, to take military or naval training." The affirmative side of 'the var sity will debate Virginia at Bal timore, while the negative will contest with Johns Hopkins at Charlottesville. Virg i n i a and Johns Hopkins will debate here. The debate was hotly contested. The others who tried out were: affirmative, Pike and Coates; negative, Shuford, Dysart, Sharpe, and Hackler. Zollicoffer Makes 4 Runs in 4 Times Up, Carolina's baseball machine, working more efficiently than it had hitherto worked this season, defeated the West Virginia Wes ley an'. Friday 11 to 3. Wesleyan made its three runs in the eighth inning after Carolina's substi tutes had been put in. The game was feitured by the costly wild throws of the visitors and the pitching of Powell, who allowed only two hits in the six innings that he pitched. Zolli coffer made four runs in four times at bat. Bailey and Massey also did good work. With Cap tain Patterson shifted to short and Massey on second the infield showed up especially well. , 1st Inning . W. Va. W. : Miller out, third to first. Blake out on a grounder to first. Singleton fans. Carolina: Zollicoffer safe on short's error. Patterson safe on first, Zolly on second when pitch er throws , wild on Patterson's bunt. Barnes fans.
