John Black, colored, of Chapel Hill, is accused of pet ty larceny consisting of the crafty purloining of one perfectly good suit of clothes from the South Building. The crime was com mitted in broad daylight, conclu sively proving that some body in the South has two suits of clothes. Messrs. Bumgardner, Rendle man, and Leatherwood are attor neys for the State, while the de fense is represented by Messrs. Candler, Cooly, and Ross. In last week's case, the jury, that is : 7 of them, could not see why Mrs. Clarence B. Elmore should have a divorce just because Hubby fell off the water wagon occasionally, so the case resulted in a mistrial. The attorneys. for prosecution were : Thomas, Jor dan, and McCuldar, while Messrs. Fowler, Leatherwood, and E. Mason were the counsel for the de fense. It was by far the best trial yet argued by the embryo lawyers in the moot court. Messrs. D. E. Darden, T. W. Folsom, S. R. Taylor, F. C. Smith, E. O. Lyday, were initi ated into Phi Chi on Monday, October 15. Math Club Elects Officers The Mathematics Club, of the University of North Carolina, met in Chemistry Hall, Wednesday, October 10th for the first meeting of the year. Officers as follows were elected: Major William Cain, president; Dr. Archibald Henderson, vice-president; Mr. J. W. Lasley, Jr., secretary-treasurer. Dr. A. W. Hobbs presented to the society a paper on "The Prin ciple of Duality." The secretary of the society gave a discussion of several problems that had been proposed to the society for solu tion. " The dancing classes over the post office have shuffled into ac tivity again and the latest Hula and Look steps may be imbibed to the tune of Jo Ohnny. It is a weird sight to see aspirants for the terpsichorean act go gliding by with all the ease of a brewery wagon going over cobblestones. Some of them prefer to danr-e a-lone. They can get along so much better when no opposing pedals persist in trampling on their inalienable right to have corns. Dr. Stair is only one of several men who have this week been pre senting this very vital problem to the men here at Carolina. Their message has been one right from the "line," and has exerted great influence over the men here who are anxious to do their bit. Everyone is familiar with the careful canvass that has been car ried on this week by a committee of students, and the chairman of this committee has given the pub lic leave to believe that Carolina's assessment has been willingly subscribed. An optimist is a man Who does n't care what happens just so it' doesn't happen to him. Floppy Hartshorn is in a nav al training station at Newport, It. I. A man is known by the com pany he joins. Enlistment will happen in the best regulated families. A patriot and his money are soon parted. One touch of kultur makes the whole world fight. Money makes tho war go. A new bomb sweeps clean.
