have been about fifty receivers of

STUDENT MILITARY LIFE
AGAIN LIVENS UP THE HILL
KHAKI AND BLACK COWS AGAIN
COME INTO THEIR OWN SEV
ERAL STUDENTS REMAINED
Again Chapel Hill blooms forth
in all its splendor and glory ; again
khaki-clad lads dot the campus
here and there; again the attack
on "black cows" begins with una
bated fury, in spite of the fact
that they have advanced one "git"
in the hope of making a stronger
stand against the thirsty enemy;
again little old Chapel Hill is
alive, after reposing for ten days
ir. dormancy and quiescence ; again
John Terry, who incidentally went
home Christmas, has taken up his
abode in the library, and can be
found there day or night.
With heavy hearts and light
heads, and with heartless exami
nations staring them in the face,
Carolina men have again taken
their post at the helm, and are
prepared, with the aid of the bat
talion, to slaughterer's" right and
left.
According to "Froggie" Wilson,
who remained here during the hol
idays for his health, Chapel Hill
enjoyed the Yuletide season in a
very quiet and peaceful way, there
being no special demonstrations.
Peter Wunsch stayed on the "Hlil"
to study for the military "tictaes"
examination, when he expects to
land a Captain's job and incident
ally he kept vigil over the Y. M. C.
A. while Francis Bardshaw went
home to eat his Christmas dinner.
Those ,who were compelled to
while their time away here during
the holidays included "Sleepy"
Bain, Holme3 Herty, Bill Lindsey,
Jack Cranmer'and Calvert Toy.
About five students, besides those
living here, remained through the
holidays, and about 20 came in
right after Christmas.
The breaking of the water
pipes in several buildings, the
Chemistry building suffering most,
and a "peppy" dance New Year's
night were the chief happenings
around here while everybody was
away celebrating.
THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT
HEADED BRIGADE

Then to Math 1 exams go the

For they no doubt will not

America. The givers of the med
al are men of greatest influence in
Southern Japan. As soon as they
found that these students desired
to increase the friendship between
Japan and the United States, they
quickly responded with such en
thusiasm that they were willing to
grant a privileged honor to men
initiating such a movement.
The ten great ingredients of a
perfect man are indicated' by S.
Such are:
Silence: the secret of power, the
doorway to the infinite, the be
loved of the wise, the refuge of
the distressed.
Strength: the goal of effort, the
means of success, the joy of self
expression, the foundation of self
respect, the purpose and product
of health.
Sense: the find of wisdom, the
right use of knowledge, the har-
vest of experience, the balance of
the faculties.
Surety: the result of faith,
knowledge of general laws, prac
tiee of hand and maturity of
thought.
Sweetness: the crown of
strength, the leafage and flower of
a well-ordered life, the profit of
discipline, the gain of sorrow.
Simplicity: the consummate art
of both craftsmanship and life, the5
atmosphere of great souls, the style
of great thoughts,' the mien of
great men.
Soundness: healthiness in all
we think, say, and do; no perver
sions, prejudices, poisonous pas
sions, overheated enthusiasms.
Steadiness: permanence and
continuity of progress; the elimi
nation of the eccentric and erra
tic ; dependableness and conse
quent trustworthiness. ' ,
Spirituality : life's significance
passing over from the body to the
mind ; Dr. J ekyll supplanting and
ousting Mr. Hyde; the entrance
of life into a higher, more satis
factory and more permanent
sphere of expression.
Supremacy: mastery over one's
self, assuring due primacy among
one's fellows; the spirit of king
ship and service, and of that do
minance that is humanity's birth
right, the endowment of influence.
To those who like to play with
great thoughts, who can use idea3
with a sense of humor, and who
can profit by logomachy in the
gentle light of harmless artificial
ity, all this may not be without
profit. Dr. Frank Crane.
