3ust 5osstp THE DEVIL IN THE BELFRY (With profuse apologies to Mr. Poe and the carpenter that fixed the bell.) When Mr. Poe wrote the Devil in the Belfry he described the confusion and chaos that ireigaied when one day the town clock failed to .chime out the hours. And such a confusion it was. Dogs forgot that they were dogs, cabbage growing in tne garden turned trink from embarrassment and things even went so far that some of the inhabitants noticed the differ ence and began to wonder what could the matter be. JFrom the time that the oldest and most wrinkled bat in the belfry atop of South Building, first saw daylight the old bell has been the perpetrator of the sound that announces every thing from "time to get up" to "hash is ready." It has been this bell that Jike some remorseless demon drove the persecuted students into the lairs of the "Profs", that also announces to the one student in the class who does not go to sleep on war issues, that it is time io wake up the other and more fortunate members of the class. Then it was this bell that an nounced to the crowd, that gazed from the classroom window, hoping against hope that the instructor would not come, that a "Grat" was theirs, . It Is also the same old bell that always persists in ringing "Get up" about ten seconds or so after you go to sleep. Grand old time honored, dust covered, mellow toned bell! Small wonder then the confusion you create when you insist on remaining silent. GOING, GOING, GONE s Tune "Good-by girls, I'm through." Good-bye food, I'm through With almost all of you. I say good-bye to you Without the least regret. I'm on the road to thinness, That fascinating slimness, And to candy all I say, Good-bye "sweets," good-bye "meats" I'm at the diet table now. CAROLINA QUINT ENDS SEASON WITH BIG END OF PERCENTAGE COLUMN (Continued from Page 1) down before the Tar Heels to the tune of 42-28. But the tide turned and Carolina suffered defeat at the hands of V. P. I. twice, once on their home floor and again the following night in Roanoke, where a fifty-fifty game was played. Thus the Carolina quint ended her most successful trip thru Virginia. Travelling each day, playing each night, she broke fifty fifty, three won, three lost. From the standpoint of pleasure it was a most congenial trip, and very successful from a financial view. "On to Raleigh" became now the slogan of not only the team but the entire student body, "Vengeance is mine," sayeth Carolina, and the stu dent body moved on Raleigh en masse. The first half of the game was one of the best played games witnessed in these parts in years, ending 14-14. The Orange and Blue came back strong in the next half and for the second time this season Carolina went down before her ancient and greatest rival. But with a new determination the team started on the last lap of the season, the southern trip. Meet ing one of the strongest "Y" teams in the Sate, Carolina nosed out a vic tory, 51-46. Davidson, contrary to her usual form and "rep", was easy meat. The team received a wire from graduate manager Woolen to journey to Camp Jackson, and return ed with her scalp as the last trophy of the season. .flfATMl Ml IAI I, 1 1 US 7( KM $)f)0tO Si Have it Framed Before it Becomes Soiled BIG ASSORTMENT OF MOULDINGS ' FOISTER'S In all sixteen games were played, ten of which were victories for the Carolina quint. i" Only three teams de feated them, these being Durham "Y", Virginia, and V. Carolina claims that she has at least an equal claim with any other State quint for the championship honors of the State. Financially it was the beat season any N. C. quint ever had, also the prospects for next season are very bright. Carlyle Shepherd, formerly forward and captain-elect of the 1917 18 quint, how serving in foreign fields, will return ; to complete his course. Douglass, of Trinity, and Liipfert, Morris, Carmichael, of this year's squad will be on back, and after winning the state championship for '19 Carolina intends to go out for bigger game next year m the shape of the South Atlantic honors. HAMLIN GARLAND SCORES HEAVILY IN INITIAL TALK TO LOCAL STUDENT BODY (Continued from Page 1) grace, and subtlety as the main points to be borne in mind by the . young writer. While not disparaging local pa triotism, Mr. Garland entered an earnest plea for a greater exchange that leadethr to fuller understanding between the North and South. Theor etically the North and South are the same. Actually such is not true, he declared. We have got to grow to ward this full unity. The world war just passing, which brought the North and South together on the bat tlefields, found in the brothers from the two great sections of the coun try many similarities and identical enthusiasms. Speaking to the students in chapel Friday morning, he urged them to arraign themselves as a counter-balancing power to check the present tendency toward Bolshevism. m U 4 D ) Ifik . 1.
