DURHAM.
The regular spring quarter meet
ing of the Freshman Friendship Coun
cil was held at a banquet at the Par
ish House last Tuesday night.. The
banquet was prepared by the ladies
of the Episcopal church and served
by high school girls. Visitors at the
meeting were Professor Frank
Graham of the history department
and Mr. E. R. Rankin of the bureau
of extension.
Mr. Rankin spoke to the Council
on their part in the coming high
school debate. He made suggestions
how they could help in the entertain
ment of the high school visitors to
the University. Acting upon his
suggestion the Council appointed a
committee to take charge of this
work. Mr. Graham next spoke to
the men on the importance of the
Blue Ridge conference next sum
mer. Secretary Comer then spoke on

was composed of the following men,

made: C. C. Poindexter, 10; V. V.
Young, 7; L. J. Phipps, 7; E. C. Jer-

Comer, 6. Total number of speeches
made, 45. There was also a str'ng
quartet along, which rendered 15
programs, composed of J. H. Men

and R. F. Hunter. The team went
to the "city-by-the-sea" under the
auspices of the boys' department of
the Y. M. C. A. and of all the city
schools.
Beginning Thursday night at a
dinner with the Working Boys' Club
of the Y. M. C. A., the team started
on a week-end of talks and good
times, being advertised all over the
city as "The Athletes" from U. N.
C. Friday morning the team di
vided and took charge of chapel at
seven different schools. Poindexter
and the quartet officiated at the high
school chapel with over 900 stu
dents present. Friday night they
fepoke at meetings of every Boy
Scout troop in the city and finally
at a dinner to the Hi-Y Club.
Saturday was the athletic day for
"The Athletes." In the morning,
however, they were entertained on
the sound with an oyster roast. Then
in the afternoon, Jernigan and Hun
ter won a tennis match over the high
school champions in spite of stiff
opposition. The high school reci
procated that night by winning a
basketbal game from Carolina by
the score of 23 to 17. A feature
of the game was that the girls of
Fayetteville and Wilmington p ayed
between halves.
Sunday morning the University
men took charge of the boys' classes
of six Sunday schools, and also at
church services. They also took
charge of a joint meeting of several
young peoples unions. The string
quartet was at the Baptist church
Sunday night and Secretary Coir-t
filled the pulpit at the Methodise
church that night.
the coming series of lectures by Sher
wood Eddy and the importance of
the freshman attending these lec

posed campus budget of pooling stu
dent activity funds. The Council
voted to send a special form letter
to every Hi-Y club in the state ex
plaining the Friendham Friendship
Council at Carolina of which every
Hi-Y boy would gecome a member
for which purpose a final commit
tee was appointed.

Thirteen miles from Springfield,
111., there is a two mile model road
that has never been used. Last week
test were begun that will bring about
the destruction of the concrete, brick
and bituminous pavements that have
been built into various sections of the
tract. Auto trucks will race over the
Bates experimental road for months
to give the highway engineers of the
country information on the actual
comparative value of the various
types of road now being built.
Sixty-three kinds of construction,
differing in kind of material, or
method of design, or construction,
were used in the test road. Each type
of construction is made in varying
thicknesses ranging from those ob
viously too thin to those overstrong,
and it is planned . to increase the
weight of the trucks as the test pro
gresses. Over twenty engineers will
constantly observe with automata
machines the deflection and other ef
fects of the premeditated and regu
lated traffic.
, The road has now seasoned two
years. It is the first road designed
and built for such a test. The Illi
nois State Highway Commission and
the United States Bureau of Public
Roads are cooperating in the large
scale testing venture. Voluminous
test data were obtained during con
struction.
: In 1919 heavy truck traffic caused
the partial destruction of a well-built
road in Illinois, Clifford Older, chief
highway engineer of Illinois, explains
This failure led ot the construction
of the model test road. Illinois has
spent over $10,000,000 on highway
construction and throughout the
country many times that amount has
or will be spent in the near future.
The Bates road test will aid in scien
tific design o roads and will do much
to eliminate doubtful 'rule of thumb"
methods, engineers believe.
