The La fayette made a rousing anti-Spanish demonstration the other day, and sent the President a telegram assuring him of their support. . The Sewanee boys also gave vent to their patriotism in a mass meeting of the student body, wind ing up by a message to Mr. McKinley urging him to action. This is a good way for these colleges to attract at tention and increase their self-importance, but we imagine President Mc Kinley has enough on his hands already without being troubled with telegrams from college students. ON PAMLICO SOUND Mr. T. G. Pearsons left Saturday for Beaufort. He will meet Prof. Holmes and Dr. Pratt at Xewberne tomorrow. From there they will start on a two weeks cruise on Pamlico sound. Mr. Pearsons took along a Winches ter rifle with which ho will endeavor from Cape Hatteras to pick off a few Spaniards. BEST DEBATERS The best debater in the Phi society March 26 was Parker. J. D. The Fre-ihmen showed the makings of n wonderful machine although it lacked the ability to put punch into the game when punch was needed. Big left-hand ed Phillips, a product of Augusta Mili tary Academy had the game completely in his hands except in the first inning and showed promise of being a good bet for next year's varsity. But three hits were garnered off his delivery nnd he was credited with the only two strike-outs of the game. The box score and summary: Carolina AB R H PO A E Wnss. 2b 2 0 0 2 6 2 Cobb. Base on balls, off have uours Tor recreation in the morn ing as well as the afternoon. It will mean that the labs that for the most part remain vacant in the mornings will be put into use. The gym can also be used the day through. This system of the eight-hour day is used in most of the larger institutions of the land. This University is one of the few that uses the half-day system. The main reasons for considering the system are that the space of the Uni versity is limited, that the present length of the periods is too short and the conflicts in the dinner hour. As yet there has been no definite action on the plan other than just to arrange for its discussion at the next faculty meeting. TRACK MEN LEAVE IN GOOD SHAPE FOR TILT AT CLEMSON (Continued from Page One) of the best men in his field that has represented Carolina. This meet will be n crucial test of the Carolina team. It will be its first ap pearnnce on the cinder path. After this contest one will be able to get a good line on the possible record of the team for the season. . Their indoor record should indicate that their apearance tomorrow in Cal houn will be a good one. They broke every record which was breakable and set records for .every new event. Their time trials were good Wednesday and if they hold up to them there is no reason why they shouldn't bring the bacon home with them Sunday morning. Phillips 2, Cherry 2. Struck out by Phillips, 2.
