The Tar Heel's fav orite swept three places which included a first in the' 220 yard hurdles, third in the broad -jump, and third in the 120 yard high hurdles. In the trials on Friday, both Albans and Bill Kirk qualified in their events with the former scoring first in the low hurdles and the broad jump. Kirk quali fied fourth in the preliminaries in the javelin but slipped to a poor seventh in the finals. The. course on the hurdles seemed a relatively new one for Albans as they were held on the curve around the track. In regu lar dual competition in the Southern Conference, the hurdles are run on a straight course. His time in the 220 lows was 23.8 which was nine tenths of a second above his best time. The first place' time in the 120 highs was 14 seconds while Albans ran in 14.2 for a third. In the broad jump he placed third with a jump of 24 feet nine and one-half in-'ches. Coaching Posts Still Vacant The two coaching vacancies at the University of North Carolina remain unfilled according to the Department of Athletics. Al though no official announcement has been made, it appears as though Sam , Barnes will take over the position as head wrest ling coach vacated by Chuck Quinlan. , Athletic Director Bob Fetzer is still seeking a new coach for the lacrosse vacancy brought about by the departure of Bill Darden. Darden will teach his tory and assist in lacrosse coach ing at the Naval Academy next year. He was head coach of lacrosse here at Carolina for two years. Barnes was head coach at VMI for a number of years and is considered the best in the South ern Conference. Art's Sport Shots Jim (Pappy) Hamilton, former freshman basketball coach and athletic star here at Carolina for many years, has been named head basketball coach at Lenoir Rhyne College. Jim, who probably did more for UNC in the way of basketball and baseball than any other man, will take over his new duties on September 1. Good luck from all the Tar Heels, Pappy. AIR CON DITIONED FOR YOUR COMFORT. &4i By Art Greenbaum The fabulous Jim Thomas is taking a well-earned rest this week. After breaking five long course backstroke records, setting two more, and barely missing another in a period of four days, Thomas, besides receiving con gratulations, is taking it fairly easy this week. He will probably resume his strenuous training in the next few days in preparation for the outdoor AAU's which are sche duled for July at Seattle, Wash. His four day barnstorming of the backstroke records will aid him in his quest of the 200 yard title at Seattle. Starting on Tuesday, Thomas broke Adolph Kiefer's record in the 500 meter race and set one for 550 yards. Wednesday, his bad day, he smashed Alan Stacks mark for 440 yards and just missed another at 400 meters. On Thursday, he switched from long course to short course and again broke another of Stack's marks. Thomas broke the one for 500 yards while establishing a new record in the 500 meter race, pn the final day of the trials. Friday, he broke Stack's Records for the 400 meter and 440 yard distances. It looks as though the former tennis greats of Carolina are having their ups and downs. Vic Seixas, regarded as one of the best on the grass courts, has held the losing racquet in some of his recent lawn comeback matches. Seixas, captain and star of the '49 team, was defeated in his last two European tourneys after scoring upsets in the early matches. Clark Taylor, 1950 Tar Heel net star, came up with the biggest upset in the Eastern Intercol legiate tourney at Syracuse, N. Y., last week when he came from behind to defeat second-seeded Sid Schwartz of Miami U. to enter the semi-finals. Carolina's beginning to receive it's share of the publicity regard ing the 1950 gridiron season which gets under way here on September 23 against N. C. State.
