THE TAR HEEL Page Seven NEW BOOKS FOR RENT BULL'S HEAD BOOKSHOP University Library r ds June 12, 1951 M ural Athletes Outstanding Groups Cited At First Mural Banquet By Buddy Norihart Awards representing outstanding Mural athletic achievements during the school year were presented to several managers and organizations at the first annual Intramural banquet, which was held the last week before the summer vacation. Jim Horton, president of the Joint Intramural Council, presided at the banquet, which was attend- ed by Mural managers, the Intra mural Staff and guest. Jim Gill, football line coach, in the role of after dinner speaker talked on the evolution of football. Coach Gill made frequent references to the great "Pop" Warner, and told the interested group of the days of the flying wedge, fake footballs, and the first forward pass. He also mentioned the first Carolina forward pass, which was thrown in desperation, and considered by some to be the first forward pass thrown in football. Intramural Director Walter Rabb presented the awards to the various groups and managers. Bill Kucyk, Mural assistant, was named to head the program' dur ing the summer and next year. He will succeed Ed Cloyd who has been recalled to the army. The first trophies went to the managers of the winning organi zations in the two divisions. Bud Ruffin, Zeta Psi, and Don Davis, A Dorm, received these awards. Kay Lewis, Sigma Chi, and Tom Kellam, B Dorm, received the trophies presented to the man agers of the runner-up organiza tions. Lewis came forward for the second of three trips to receive the Fraternity division award for the outstanding manager. Davis won this waard for the dormitory division. The outstanding athlete awards were presented to David Collins from the Med School and Lewis. The winning organizations, Zeta Psi and A Dorm received large trophies as asymbol of their Mur al prowess. The Zetes collected 1002.82 points during the school year, 2.87 points better than their closest rival Sigma Chi. A Dorm amassed 834.26 points, 79.73 points better than their closest competi tor B Dorm. The next three Fraternities in order were Chi Psi, 788.23 points; DKE, 753.09; and Phi Gam 737.65 Med School was third in the dormitory division with 693.40 points, followed by Ruffin dorm with 604.40. Mural Slate Announced For Summer The summer Intramural pro gram will move into high gear June 19, with softball tennis, and golf. ..Because of the limited enrollment fraternity and dormi tory teams will compete in the same division. Entries for softball and tennis must be turned in not later than 10 a.m. June 16 to room 315 Wool len Gym. Fblfers must turn their qualifying scorecard to Mr. Ken ney or Mr. Brown at the golf shop and pay an entry fee of 50 cents. The only eligibility rule for softball will be that a player can represent only one team during a session. Games will be played at 4 and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Teams may be en tered from fraternities, dormitor ies or independent groups. Only faculty members and stu dents will be eligible for tennis competition with play limited to men's singles. The tournament will be conducted on a single elimination basis. Qualifying dates for golfers are scheduled June 11-20. The tourn ament is limited to faculty mem bers and students with single elimination match play by flights. Golfers will be placed with others of equal ability. The Mural office has announced June 22-29 for first round matches. Thereafter four days will be allowed for each round of play. Awards will be given to each flight champion and runner-up. Kessing Pool Offers Full Program By Bill Grimes Both students and townspeople will be able to take advantage of the facilities of Kessing Pool dur ing gthe summer sessions. The University's modern out door swimming pool is open to students upon presentation of their swimming privilege tickets firmary. Faculty and towns which may be obtained at the in people may get their tickets at the Coashier's Office in the base ment of South Building. . The prices per term will be $2 for children and $3 for adults. Another feature will be swirn ing instruction classes for all who are interested. Men are to con tact Mike Roman at the pool and women must make arrangements through the Women's Athletic Department. Chlidren must be five years of age or over. All men and boys must wear suits furnished at Woollen Gym but women and girls may wear their own suits. POOL HOURS Children Instruction 11:00 to 12:00 Monday through Friday. Childrens Recreation 11 :00 to 12:30 Saturday; 3:30 to 4:30 Daily. Childrens Swimming Teams 2:00 to 4:00 (See Bob Ousley). General Recreation 12:00 to 6:00 Monday through Friday; 11:00 to 5:00 Saturday; 2:00 to 5:00 Sunday. Adult Instruction See University Summer Bulletin.
