Page Five Page Four Friday, June 15, 1951 THE TAR HEEL Chess, Table Tennis Tourneys Slated As a part of its summer enter tainment program Graham Me morial Student Union will spon sor a chess tournament for all stu dents who desire to participate. The tournament is to be conduct ed in accordance with the Swiss System. In this system every player is given a fair opportunity to dem onstrate his skill, and there is little opportunity for weaker players to obtain a ranking in the tournament higher than is warranted by their chess ability. In general, the Swiss system pairs players with the same tournament score; the players with the same scores being paired for play. A win will be scored as one point, a draw as Vz point, and a loss as nothing. It is hoped that as many play ers as possible will enter, for this event will provide an op portunity for the chess-plajers of the campus to become acquainted with each other. The first-place winner will be given an award. This tournament is free to all students of Carolina. - Players may register for the tournament at the main office of Graham Memorial through next week. The number of games and the schedule will depend on the entries. Directors of the tourna ment will be Tommy Sumner and Kit Crittenden. Other tournaments covering various fields will be held as in terest in them crystalizes. In continuing its policy of pro viding facilities for campus wide competition in varous games and skills Graham Memorial is also preparing to operate a student table tennis tournament. In the past this has been an annual event held each spring, but in view of the interest which has been exhibited by players it was decided to extend the oppor tunity, to students in the summer school as well. The tournament will be man aged through single eliminations with the number of rounds de- WELCOME!
