(Pete) Ivey, a 1934 graduate of the University of North Carolina, is one of the 12 American news papermen to win a Lucius W. Nieman Fellowship. The fellowships are awarded annually by Harvard University where Ivey will study for one year, beginning in September. Ivey is ascociate editor of the Winston-Salem Journal and Sen tinel. His fellowship award es tablished a new record. It mark ed the first time in the 14-year history of the awards that two members of the same paper have won Nieman Fellowships in suc cessive years. Journal and Sen tinel Reporter Hoke Norris, a Wake Forest graduate, was awarded, one of the fellowships last summer and has recently completed his one-year of study at Harvard. Ivey, a 38-year-old Rocky Mount native, majored in journa lism at Carolina and was editor of the Buccaneer humor mag during his senior year. He also lettered in boxing and was a member of the Order of the Gold en Fleece. Following his graduation in 1934, Ivey remained at the Uni versity for two years as director of the Graham Memorial Student Union. He came to Winston-Salem as a reporter in 1938, and shortly thereafter established a daily column, "Pass the Peanuts." He entered the Army in 1942 land rose through the ranks from private to captain. Out of the army in 1946, he assisted General Omar Bradley with the establish ment of the Veteran's Adminis tration. Ivey's job was to or ganize newspapers in 125 veterans Sports Star To Enroll Wilmington's great three-sports star, Charlie Niven, has notified admission officials that he will enroll at Carolina in time for the second term of the Summer Ses sion. Niven, called one of the port city's greatest athletes, has an outstanding high school record. As a tailback on the football team he was one of the South's high scorers and was a member of the All-State team. In basketball he also was awarded All-State honors and was named the outstanding play er at the State tournament this year at Durham. During the past school year he also was one of Wilmington's top diamond aces. Under Southern Conference regulations, Niven will be eligible for varsity play in September as a freshman and figures prom inently in Coach Carl Snavely's plans for next season. Leave Tomorrow .... About 30 students and towns people will leave Chapel Hill at 8 a.m. tomorrow to attend the opening performance of the "Lost Colony" at historic Fort Raleigh. The trip, sponsored by the Play makers, will include visits to the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kill Devil Hill and the Fort Ra leigh musiiem. Named Chess Champ Charles C. (Kit) Crittenden, first quarter freshman from Ra leigh, won the North Carolina chess championship at a tourna ment held recently in Smithfield. Every year since that time his editorials have won awards in the annual North Carolina Press As sociation competition. Ivey is married and has two children, ages five and two. His wife is also a UNC graduate. She will accompany him to Harvard and plans to do graduate work with her husband during the next school year. Holdash Named Huck Holdash, Tar Heel All America, was the first center named to the collegiate squad for the Aug. 17 AU-Star foot ball game. Twelve collegians thus far have accepted bids to play against the Champion Cleveland Browns of the Na tional Football League.
