Miss Harrison, the daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. J. P. Harrison of
Kinston, taught during the past
year at Johnson C. Smith Uni
versity in Charlotte. She received
her bachelor of arts degree from
Spelman College in Atlanta and
a master's degree from the Uni
versity of California in 1950.
Last spring she applied to the
University for admission to the
summer session in order to begin
work on a doctorate in Spanish.
Miss Harrison claims that her
application for admittance was at
first accepted and she was as
signed to a room in C dormitory
for the summer. She had desig
nated her race on the room as
signment form, she stated.
However when she arrived in
Chapel Hill on Monday, June 11,
for summer school, she was told
by Chancellor R. B. House that
a mistake had been made and that
the University was now aware
that she was a Negro, Miss Harri
son claims.
At the time, House termed the
incident an "honest mistake."
"I told her this," he said. "We
have made a mistake in assigning
you to a room before you have
actually been admitted to the
University and thus have given
you the impression that you have
been admitted.
"Then I explained to her that

will be under the leadership of

Mr. John Coleman, Lecturer in
Mathematics at the University of
Toronto, will be guest speaker at
a Supper Seminar at 5:30 Friday
evening in the basement of the
Methodist church. All students
and faculty members are invited
to attend, and may sign up with
Gay Currie in the YWCA office.
At 7 o'clock that evening the
Summer Activities Program will
sponsor its third annual Water
melon Festival. Highlight of the
evening will be the coronation
ceremonies for the Queen of the
Watermelon Festival.
According to Jim Rathburn,
director student activities, over
one hundred and fifty students
participated in the square dance
held Friday night in the Y court
Many girls came on their own
initiative, Rathburn said. They
were able to find partners for the
dances, he added, and all who
attended seemed to have had
good time. The event was an
encouraging one as far as student
participation in summer activi
ties is concerned, he said.
Next Friday night, as part of
the Watermelon Festival, a simi
lar square dance is scheduled to
take place. Those in charge o
arrangements hope that at. many
girls as possible will come .stag

University of North Carolina
trustees in April adopted a policy
admitting qualitied .Negroes on
the graduate level when equa

the State in its Negro colleges.
Since May 22 however, the Uni

to its law school and medica

pending development of proposed
graduate expansion plans at
North Carolina College.
