The fundamental issues involv-
3d in the world-wide conflict be
tween communism and democra
:y will be subjected to a thor
ough analysis and study at a Free-
World Workshop which opens
here Sunday and continues for
a week.
Forty school teachers from
throughout the State have been
selected to participate in the pro
gram. Selection was made on the
basis Df interest and community
leadership qualities.
Scholarships- covering the ex
penses of the participants have
been awarded by the University.
The workshop will be directed
by Prof. E. M. Adams of the De-
oartmsnt of Philosophy of the
University and will be adminis
tered by the University Exten
sion Division.
Primary objective of the work
top, according to Prof. Adams
is "to contribute to a better and
uller understanding of the fun
damental issues involved in the
most basic and important conflict
in the present world crisis: A con
flict not primarily between two
Geographical areas, East and West
nor between twoipowerful states
Russia and the United States; but
a conflict between two ideologies
;or the minds and hearts of men
and women everywhere.
"It is the duty of everyone to
seek to understand the ideas and
ideals involved in this conflict, for
this is the only way in which
truth and freedom can triumph,"
he said. "Public school teachers
are in a position to stimulate and
lead the thinking not only of their
pupils but of .their entire commu
nities. The workshop is designed
as an aid to selected teachers in
their attempts to promote discus
sion and understanding in their
school communities of the funda
mental issues in the idealogical
struggle between -democracy and
communism."
