Prior to teaching here, he practiced law in Greensboro. Active in city and county government, Professor Hobbs was a member of the Board of Alder men of Chapel Hill for many years and is at present a member of the Orange County Board of Commission ers. He has taught extensively in the area of government and business and is co-author of the fourth edi Lion oi "Eritton and Bauer's Cases and Ma terials on Business Law". Professor Hobbs has done much work in the field of industrial arbi tration throughout the South and is a member of the American Arbitra tion Association. House, I with members of the Art Department ; j staff and other well-wishers atte-nd-; ing, the Universitv conferred upon Mr. Daniels the title of "Honorary Curator-Emeritus of Person Hall Art Gallery" in recognition of his 15 years of devoted service to the Uni versity. Chancellor House presented to Mr. : Daniels an engraved certificate bear-' ing the inscription of the citation. The certificate was signed by the Chancellor, by John V. Alicott, head of the Art Department, and by J. A. Williams, personnel officer. Chancellor House paid high tribute to the retiring member of the Univer sity statf, pointing out that his paint-. ings, homespun philosophy, his at tractive? garden, and his hospitable home had won for him a large and devoted following. Monday-Saturday Chancellor House said. 'Tie is a primitive style artist who paints or draws something that real ly looks like what he paints or draws. In his home, where many visitors all lie has his own gallery in which more than oil examples of his woik are shown." Chancellor House called Mr. Dan iels an "outstanding example of goo:! neighbor and friend and a strong in fluence in the religious development cf the community. He has endeared him self in the affections of the whole community. I know of no one who has more wholeheartedly entered in to the life of the community and .-tate." The Chancellor said Mr. Daniels' philosophy is well summarized in a book "Sunshine and Shadows" which ; the author hopes to publish soon. He announced that an exhibition of : Mr. Daniels' paintings and drawings, of which there are thousands, will be held in the Person Hall Art Gallery early in August. Art Chairman Alicott said that "Archie Daniels is one of few people I in the Art Department who can sell : their paintings." He pointed out that ; one of Daniels' paintings, a water; color entitled "American Beauty Rose", now hangs in Town Hall, New j York, being bought by former Town j Hall Manager George V. Denny. j Before coming to Chapel Hill 15 i years ago Mr. Daniels served in sev- j oral positions. He was reared on a ' tobacco farm at Hurdle Mills, Person ; County, the third son of Francis M. j and Frances R. Daniels. j He was educated in the schools of Person County and was active in church work, being a Sunday school superintendent for 16 years. He ; taught in the public schools two years, j was justice of peace, and served for j 12 years in the United States gov- i eminent as postmaster, rural mail i carrier, and postoffice clerk.
