DURHAM V a le ry Borzov,
Olympic gold medalist in both the 100
and 200 meter dashes, heads the list of
Russian athletes who will compete in
Durham July 5-6 in the 12th USA
USSR Track & Field Meet. Borzov,
who did not compete in the USA-USSR
indoor meet in Moscow, did come back
to win the 60-meter dash in the
European championships and is
reported to be in top condition.
Five-time Olympic long jumper and
now Russian head track coach IgorTer
Ovanesyan, said, 'Valery has shed his
excess weight and is in full training
again. He wants to win at the European
Championships and the Durham meet
will serve as a stepping stone."
Borzov recently ran a 10.2 100 meters
(world record is 9.9) on a cold, windy
day in Tbilisi on a loose cinder track.
Aleksandr Kornelyuk, who tied the
world record for 60 meters indoors in
the USA-USSR indoor meet, will join
Borzov in the sprints.
Top middle distance performer,
Yevgeny Arzhanov, will also make the
trip. Arzhanov presently owns a streak
of three straight 800 meter victories in
USA-USSR outdoor competition. The
S00 meters will match Arzhanov against
U.S. world record-holder at 880 yards,
Rick Wohlhuter. Wohlhuter ran in
Durham last year at the Martin Luther
King Games, anchoring the Chicago
Track Club's two mile relay team to a
world record.
At 5000 meters, the Soviets will bring
to Durham Soviet record holder
Michail Zhelobovsky and last year's
USA-USSR outdoor champion Nikolai
Sviridov.
The Soviets seem clearly superior in
this event, having won nine of 1 1 races
prior to this year's contest. Moving up

to 1 0,000 meters, the Soviets will look to
Anatoly Bodrankov to repeat his
winning performance of a year ago.
Soviet hurdle star, Yevgeniy
Gavrilenko, who upset the Americans
last year in Minsk in the 400 meter
hurdles, will return to defend his title.
Last year's 3000 meter steeplechase
winner, Leonid Savelev, will be present
along with 1971 steeplechase winner
Romuald Bitte.
Leading the Soviet field delegation
will be world record holder Viktor
Saneyev in the triple jump. Saneyev has
been ranked number one in the world in
his event for the last five years. Saneyev
will be accompanied by teammate
Mikhail Bariban, who has a jump of 55
4Vi indoors to his credit.
Veteran hammer thrower Anatoliy
Bondarchuk trops the list of Soviet
weight men. Bondarchuk has been
ranked number one in the world four of
the past five years.
World indoor leader Kestutis Sapka
will be entered in the high jump along
with young hopeful Sergeiy Budalov,
who is being billed by the Soviet press as
the next Valery Brumel.
Long jumpers Valeriy Podluzhyiand
Alekseiy Pereversev, who finished 1-2 in
the USA-USSR indoor meet, will also
compete in Durham.
The Soviet women's team will once
again be dominated by world record
holders in the field events.
Incomparable weight women Nadezhda
Chizova, shot put, and Faina Melmik,
discus, lead the Soviet contingent. Both
hold world records in their events and
should be in a class of their own in
Durham.
An abundance of talent also abounds
in the Soviet women's running corps.

DURHAM (UPI) Modest Russian
head coach IgorTer-Ovanesyan and his
team of competitors arrived at the
Raleigh-Durham Airport Saturday for
this week's USA-USSR Track Meet on
a note of pessimism.
"This meet is the end of the track and
field season for you, but for us it is the
beginning," said Ter-Ovanesyan. uWe
expect to be better at the end of the
season."
The group has not competed as a
national team yet, he said. The coach
said that while the squad contained 90
per cent of the best representatives of the
track and field in the Soviet Union their
' form is not the very best yet.
The coach brushed aside a question
about comments to the effect the
Russians are favored to win the meet
this Friday and Saturday, saying that if
two meeting with U.S. rivals at 400
meters, recently set the world indoor
mark at that distance and will be a threat
to topple the outdoor mark at Durham.
World record holderat I500and 3000
meters, Ludmila Bragina, will likely run
the 3000 and leave the 2500 to former
Soviet record holder Tamara
Pangelova.
Sprinter Nadezhda Besfamilnaya,
who captured both the 1 00 and 200
meters at M insk last year, heads a strong
group which includes Soviet 200 meter
record holder Marina Sidrova.
Ter-Ovanesyan concluded by saying,
"Yes, I think you can call us number
one. We defeated East Germany last
year, so there is nobody left, although
West Germany has yet to be faced.

that were so "then why would your team
participate.
Ter-Ovanesyan said he felt the U.S.
team selected from the national AAU
Championship three weeks ago was
"very good and the players should be in
good shape. He predicted a "very
exciting meet" and said the competition
would be "very useful" to the Russians
in their quest for the European Track
Championship later this year.
American coach J immy Carnes of the
University of Florida welcomed the
Soviet team and told them they were
"ranked number one but we're looking
forward to possibly becoming number
one ourselves." He said he was
optimistic about the U.S. team's
chances.
One of the closest contest will match
Valery Borzov and Steve Williams in the
1 00 meter dash. Williams equalled the
100 meter record of 9.9 at the AAU meet
and Borzov won gold medals in the 100
and 200 meter races in the 1 972
Olympics.
Williams bested Borzov in the 400
meter anchor leg last year at M insk and
the Russian is eager to compete against
Williams. Borzov could not predict
what k ind of performance he might tu rn
in. "It is rather difficult to do your best
at the beginning of the season," he said.
"Usually the best results appear at the
end of the season." But the competition
will be very useful and exciting. It is
always better to compete with the
strongest person.

Dr. Leroy Walker, North Carolina
Central coach and co-director of the
meet, predicted the key to winning will
be "toss up events."
The Russians are expected to win the
hammer throw with Olympic Champion
Anatoliy; the 5,000 meter walk and the
triple jump where gold medalist Victor
Saneyev is the top Soviet entry.
The "toss-up" events as Walker sees
it, are the shot put, long jump, pole
vault, high jump and 1,500 meter run.
In the long jump, for example.
Walker said "Bouncey Moore and Amie
Robinson are as good as the Russians.
It's going to be a question of who is
better that day."
He predicted Rick Wohlhuter, who
broke the 880 mark this month, should
win that event over Yevgeny Arzhanov,
who edged Wohlhuter in last year's
meet. The Americans are also rated a
good chance of winning both the 100
and 400 relays, but under international
scoring the Russians would still get two
points in those events with a loss. .
The Russians are also favored in the
javelin toss, where world record holder
Jan is Lusis heads the Soviet field,
though Americans San Colson and Fred
Luke are expected to offer stiff
competition.
In the women's events, the Russian
field includes three gold medalists
Nadezhda Chizova in the shot put,
Faina Melnik in the discus and
Lyudmila Bragina in the 1,500 and 3,000
meter races.

loser for the Tar Heels as Louisburg scored
five unearned runs.
Louisburg's record is now 8-3. The Tar
Heels dropped to 5-8 after being tied for the
league lead with a 5-3 record.
Carolina's next home game is this
