Talk about together!
Wayne Henderson and Wilton Felder
have been playing music together since
they v.cre kids in Houston, Texas.
And now they're together with two
other guys from Houston, and they're
The Crusaders, and they're the most
tosether band around.
Consider the way Wayne Henderson
on trombone and Wilton Felder on
tenor sax hold one, solid continuous,
beautiful tonal note near the end of So
Far Away.
O.K. They were playing The Kennedy
Center in Washington last Sunday. And
the two men glide on stage and start
blowing their horns, and they hit the
same notes and they play the same riffs,
and it's just beautiful to hear.
When they play So Far Away,
everyone takes a solo, and the talent of
the whole group becomes apparent. Joe

his drums so hard that the tenor cymbal
was bent. He plays fast and furiously
and sometimes his legs look like he's
running a 50-yard dash.
Larry Carlton plays guitar. He and
bassist Max Bennett are from Tom
Scott's L.A. Express, but they also play
with the Crusaders. Carlton plays
mellow tones that ring through the
concert hall at his command. When he
broke a string, he played around it with
the greatest of ease.
But ease is the way to describe the way
Henderson and Felder play, too.
Together they look like a Mutt and Jeff
duo. Felder is tall and thin and was
wearing a checked suit. Henderson is
shorter and round in the belly and was
wearing jeans. His shirt tail wasn't even
tucked in.
So, you missed them at the Concert
Hall. So did a lot of people. But, you can
pick up a copy of Scratch recorded live
at the Roxy and hear them.
And; listen. Do you hear that horn?
Do you hear that note? That's not a
note. That's two people playing. Two
people playing as one.
