The run ended a game marred by debates between umpires and coaches over calls and by mistakes. The first score of the game came like the last one from Jones. He was knocked in by a hit from Lindsey Ethridge. Appalachian immediately answered UNC in the early portion of the second with Fred Whitt scoring off a hit by Jack Tompkins. But Carolina threw open a large lead in the bottom of the second. With Marty Rasnake on second and Mike Merritt on first, Bill Lee hit the ball in the direction of second base. Appalachian blew an easy out by an overthrow at first base, it also led to a run by Rasnake and Merritt getting to third while Lee made it to second. Merritt ended up going home by stealing and Lee was knocked in by a hit from Jones. Carolina then led 4-1. Neither team would score again until each one got one piece in the fourth. Appalachian got its run when Evans Crocker and Whitt combined for a double steal: Crocker taking home and Whitt taking second. Appalachian remained quiet until the seventh when their designated hitter, Mike Allen, stole home when a fast ball went off of the glove of Carolina's catcher Jimmy Baldwin. It was in the following eighth inning that Appalachian was to tie it up at 5 all. With Crocker on third, Carolina's pitcher Mike Merritt threw a wild pitch; before Baldwin could retrieve it, Crocker stole home. The second run came when Tompkins was knocked in by Allen. UNC then held Appalachia in the ninth and 10th innings and regained their own poise in the 10th. Jones got a one base hit. Next he was pushed to second base by a sacrifice by Baldwin, Appalachian then purposely walking Ethridge. Ron Merritt, who had been substituted for Mike Wilkerson in the seventh, knocked a hit which bounced off the glove of Appalachia's short stop Mike Ramsey which sent Jones in to end the game. The winning pitcher for Carolina was Mike Merritt who walked two men and struck out five. The losing pitcher for Appalachian was Jim Blankenship who walked six men and struck out nine. UNC ended the night with six runs, eight hits and three errors to Appalachia's five runs, 10 hits and two errors. The Tar Heels turned out another win Sunday night by downing the Wilmington Sea Hawks 3-2. Game honors went to Carolina's left fielder Marty Rasnake who drove in two runs to establish Carolina's lead and subsequent victory. Wilmington's two runs came from Van Lewis scoring off of a hit by Swain Smith in the first and Randy Ourt coming in from a hit by Thurston Watkins in the seventh. Carolina's first score came off a steal by Ronnie Merritt in the third. Rasnake's hit came in the sixth. With two outs and bases loaded with Lindsay Ethridge on third base, Dave Gursoy on second and Merritt on first, Rasnake put a line drive past Wilmington's third baseman Bob Schupp. Rasnake went to first and Merritt to second with Ethridge and Gursoy going on into home. Leading batters for the Sea Hawks were Howie Edgerton and Thurston Watkins who got tw o hits apiece. No one on the Carolina team got more than one hit. The losing pitcher for Wilmington was Paul Fulton who struck out one man and walked five. Carolina had two pitchers for the night. The winning pitcher was Tim Collins who pitched through most of the seventh inning; striking out none and w alking four. He was then followed by Bruce Arrowood who finished out the night. The Tar Heels compiled three runs, four hits and one error to the Sea Hawks' two runs, six hits and two errors. Carolina's next home game is against league leading Louisburg Thursday night at 7:30.
