Exeter and Andover acade mies have made more stars than any other junior schools in the country. They made their reputations in the early part of the century when Yale, Harvard and Prince ton were the football leaders. By William L. Beerman The 1937 intramural season ended yesterday as eight mat burned grapplers walked off with medals for their prowess in the 14th annual wrestling tournament. . Sigma Nu, campus champions of last year, retained that honor only by virtue of an extremely large number of entrants. SAE sent three men to the finals out of an original entry of five, and wo came . through with titles. Sigma Nu had only two finalists out of a field of 28 entrants, but both men won. As points were also allowed for the number of participants, Sigma JNu was given the intramural crown with 140 points. However, SAE really won the wrestling matches with 115 points. Lambeth-Hamlin Lambeth (Beta Theta Pi) started the finals off by defeat ing Hamlin (Everett) in the 118 lb. class. Staying on top most of the time, Lambeth took the title with a time advantage of 3:14. The next bout, a 126 lb. affair, was contested turiousiy as Goodwin (SPE) tried to stave off the rushes of Gregory (KA) . Gregory took the match with a fall in 3:04. Blackmer-Shaw Extended into two extra pe riods, the 135 lb. event finally I came to a close with both con tenders practically out on their feet. Battling each other from a standing position, Blackmer (Sigma Nu) and Shaw (Ruf- fin) spent more time off the mat than on it. The regular eight minute limit ended with neither wrestler having an advantage,! so two extra periods of two min utes each were allowed. Black mer coasted through with a 3 :38 advantage over the panting Shaw. Broadfoot (SAE) exhibited excellent technique and reserve power as he overcame Milner (Steele) with a fall in 1:55. Milner, tough and sturdy, sub mitted unwillingly to the light ning-like tactics of his 145 lb. opponent. Robertson Fastest pin of the day saw Robertson (SAE) turn the tables and flatten- Joyner (Grimes) in the 155 lb. strug gle. Coming out fighting as the openingbell rang, both men hit the mat with Joyner on top. Spectators yelled madly, as the dormitory entrant seemed to have a sure victory in his grasp, but Robertson with one power ful surge, flipped himself to the title with a fall in 1:09. Defending his title in the 165 lb. class,' Hairston (Sigma Nu) managed to keep it by defeating Broadfoot (SAE). Broadfoot, whose brother took the 145 lb. championship, fought hard every second of the battle, but fell be fore Hairston's body-pin in 3:06. Bob Spessard's Height May Not Mean Sd Much Now Those loud groans blowing' down from the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia are prob ably emitting from Lexington, seat of Washington and Lee. The man doing the groaning, no doubt, is Cy Young, basketball coach of the Generals. Young is groaning because they've taken the center jump out of basketball this year. Mr. Young's game is built around the center jump and Bob Spes- sard, his 6-foot, 7-inch center. Spessard's main stock in trade is tapping the ball to team-mates on the center jump, and then going under the basket to sink field goals. Spessard was so good at it last year, that he car ried W. & L. to the Southern conference, championship. In the finals against Carolina he scored over 20 points, just tapping the ball and standing under the bas ket. The abolition of the tap will keep Spessard from tapping the ball to Borries, and then ga under the basket for a shot. In stead the team scored upon will take the ball after each shot. There will be only two jumps a game, at the beginning, and at' the start of the second half. This rule will give the little men a break.
