It's The Lull Before The Storm There Are No Athletic Events WITH LEAVE TO PRINT By RAY HOWE CHAPEL HILL, N. C THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 1938 I " TheChamps J A la Laurence Leonard . I was passing the time of day over coffee and doughnuts with a fellow the other afternoon who jmows Milan Zorri, State's ex traordinary discus thrower of a couple of years ago. He said that the Stater wanted to come to Chapel Hill this spring to teach the Carolina men how to throw the weights ... All he wants his room and board, which is cheap enough "if he can guarantee a couple of extra points in those divisions when the track meets start cropping up . . . Zorri was oridnally slated for Chapel Hil before he met; one Hunk Ander son in wolfs clothing. I also happened to meet some of the State football players dur ing the holidays . . . Danny Pilo- seno, Art Rooney, Tony diYesso, Mickey Sullivan,, Joe Schwerdt and a couple of others . . . Con trary to popular conception, the Staters are chawming fellows . . . chawming. They told me that Doc Newton is going to have two backfields and one line. Davey Clark paid for my lunch. . While I'm on the subject of football . . . Tom Burnette, pick ed by Sports Illustrated as the best place-kicker in the whole dawg-gone country, is still very much in the selling game and now has "a very banner-ish ban ner with all the past season's football scores made by Carolina along with a couple of auto graphs on sale ... George Moore, one of the backf ield stars on the 1933 team, has returned to school this quarter to com plete work for his degree. Screwiest baseball hit of yes terday was made by Al Mathes, sophomore candidate for Hal Bissett's first base . . . Radman threw him three balls and two strides and then a wild one . . . As Mathes ducked away, the ball hit his bat and pranced down the first base line . . . Mathes ended up on second base. ASPIRIN STOCK IS DOWN; RADMAN, HUDSmiNFOM Both Pitchers Show Up ,Well In Pre-Season Practice Tilts The Carolina chapter of the Amalgamated Order of Hair Tearers and Nail-Biters can go and hide in the corner for a little while longer anyway, for in the past few days both Bud Hudson and George Radman have come through 'with pitching exhibi tions that have indicated that these two chuckers will be very much in evidence on the Caro lina baseball front as aids to Daffy Parker, both before and after Parker cures his sore arm. In Tuesday's practice game, Hudson pitched four innings of near-perfect ball, while Radman turned in - seven good innings against the second liners yester day. George kept ramming a last ball down the Yannigan throats as he fanned six men to win 8-4. In addition to turning in a neat mound job, Radman also hit a home run in the sixth inning with one man on that sent the regulars ahead for keeps in the ball game. Team Opens Tuesday After watching Hudson and Radman go to town, Bunn Hearn said the starter in the season opener against Richmond Tues day would be one of the two. His starting second baseman is still to be drawn put of the hat, while five fly-chasersare battling for the right to play on either side of Tom Burnett in the season's opener. When George Ralston fanned Harry LeGrande during the course of yesterday's battle everybody almost fell off the bench ... It was the first time LeGrande has fanned since he started playing baseball here . . . George Stirnweiss continues to hit the ball hard . . . Yester day he got three for four, hit ting the ball hard every time . Hal Bissett, who last season (Continued on last page) Mural Bowling Carolina Headquarters Toe YOUNG MEN'S SHOP 126-128 E. Frank Trotman took first in the flying rings for the other. Duke's Monk Lewis and Paul Peters took the parallel bar and tumbling championships to keep Duke in the race. Daring Young Man Trotman's victory on the fly ing rings was clean cut. His re verse to a handstand is' some thing which few amateurs in the country can do, Dr. Lawson stated and Lawson has seen plenty of them. Jim Kirkpatrick's taking sec ond place in the tumbling was the surprise of the meet. An in different performer during the practice sessions preceding the meet, he showed a complete change of form under pressure. The horizontal bar was all Carolina, though only two were officially representing the team. Winstead took first; Jimmy Verner, second, and Kirkpat rick, third. Winstead and Ver ner were competing under Caro lina colors in this event, Kirk patrick listed as unattached.
