A senior team, presumably
one of the greatest in Univer
sity football history, played
one of Carolina's toughest
schedules this fall and sur
vived with four defeats and
six vjetpries, climaxing the
up-and-down season with an
all-important 6-3 victory over
Duke.
Plaudits went to Paul Sev
erin, who made the Associat
ed Press All-America first
team at end for the second
straight year, and to Sweet
Jim Lalanne, an all-star quar
terback who hasn't gained the
honor due him ; and Harry
Dunkle, whose season punting"
average of 42.5 was among the
top five in the nation.

CAROLINA OPENED THE SEASON with a 56-6 win over Appalachian
before school started, and anticipations increased for a great season. Johnny
Pecora, sophomore' tailback wearing , No. 92, dashed 42 yards on his first
play to score. Wake Forest npset things, however, with a 12-0 victory, and
the only bright spot on the field for Carolina was Paul Severin, catching
passes, runnipg ends-around and- stopping the Deacon attack ...
i
. . . TULANE BEAT CAROLINA, 14-13, in the last few minutes of the Homecoming Day game when a punt was
blocked and the free ball carried 45 yards for the score. Lalanne completed six of 13 passes and carried the ball 14
times for an average of 4.7. Severin scored first, having to take two passes in a row because he stepped out of the
end zone the first time, and Lalanne carried over the second score. Severin is carrying the ball in this picture,
chased by Fullback Jim Thibaut and Tommy OTSoyle (77), both of whom made Carolina's all-opponent team . . .

. . . NOWELL PLAYED 54 MIN
UTES while Carolina barely got
away with a 13-7 win over the State
Wolf pack, and figured in - almost
every tackle the first half and
handled himself capably the second.
Sid Sadoff was at his season peak,
carrying the ball 17 times for an
average of 42. Lalanne saved the
game late in the fourth quarter by
dragging down Pat Fehley on the
Carolina 15 after the State back had
run 85 yards ...

. . . RICHMOND won on passes in
the last five minutes, 14-13, while
Carolina was piling up 213 yards in
rushing and made 17 first downs to
Richmond's nine ...
... A 27-7 WIN OVER DAVIDSON didn't give a true indication of the ragged showing of the Tar Heels in their
appearance at Winston-Salem. Frank OUare carried the ball 19 times for a 5.66 rushing average, and. Pecora had
nine rushes for an average of 9.7. All expectations were fulfilled and bettered, though, when tie famed aerial
circus of Texas Christian, tutored by Ray Wolfs old boss, was dumped, 21-14. Jim Lajanne dashed 59 yards for
one score, Don Baker ran 70 yards for another, and Lalanne carried over a third in a brilliant second quarter as
sault. Lalanne is going off right tackle in this picture .

'HAPPY DAYS HERE AGAIN" A second-quarter field goal by
Tony Ruff a was a bad omen for Duke, according to the superstitious, so
Carolina started a 75-yard march in the third quarter and scored in the fourth
when Lalanne passed to Joe Austin from the 2-yard line. Carolina had 12
first downs to seven for Duke. Six men Severin, Dick Sieck, Gwynn Nowell,
Gates Kimball, Stu Richardson, and Sid Sadoff played the entire 60 min
utes, and Carl Suntheimer, Bob Smith, Harry Dunkle and Bill Faircloth
contributed other outstanding performances. . . . Carolina beat Virginia,
10-7, in the last game. The winning margin was Dunkle's field goal in the
third quarter, after a 7-7 half-time score. Each team missed several scoring
chances, but Carolina won at the end and called its season a successful one.
