Naval Amphibs Should Have
Strong Team In Track Meet
Track fans in this section should be in for a rare treat at the
annual Southern indoor classic here February 23, judging from
today's entry from the Little Creek, Va., Naval Amphibs, which
lists one former National Champion; a Big Ten and Penn Relay
winner; an NCAA, ICAAAA, and Penn winner and three ex-Na
tional Interscholastic Champs.
The Amphibs were the firsts
outfit to send in their formal
blank for the Open Division of
the big meet, although several
leading high and prep teams
from throughout the South have
already filed for the Scholastic
Division.
The entries do not close until
February 15, and if the other
college and service stars come
up to the calibre of the Little
Creek aces, the 1946 Games may
turn out to be about the fastest
and finest on record here.
The former National 10,000-
meters champion, Ted Vogel,
heads the Amphib entries. He
has run the 2-mile in the sensa-
tional time of 9 minutes 24 sec-

Harvey, Freshman Swimmer
Fast Gains Due A ttention
The swimminer meets of the
past week, namely the Carolinas
AAU event and the Southern
Conference title match with
Duke, have seen a young fresh
man natator rise rapidly to com
mand attention. He is none oth
er than John Harvey, Jr. who
hails from Lexington, Kentucky.
Harvey's specialty is the 50
yard freestyle sprint, but he is
also proficient in the 100 yard
distance. Last Saturday in the
AAU's he won the 50-meter
freestyle of the junior division
in the promising time of 28.2 sec
onds, while in the Duke meet he
finished a close second to Mike
Morrow when the latter shaved
two seconds off the conference
record. As a matter of fact,
Harvey was leading Morrow for
the greater part of the distance
and it was only in the last width
that Morrow overhauled him and
edged him out.
A pre-med student, Harvey
has always been interested in
swimming and participated in
the snort while at summer
camps. In the army he was an
air forces cadet, spending two
years in the States. During his
cadet college training at Mon
tana State University, he broke
the pool record there for the
fortv-meter freestyle, dropping
the time in that event to 19.5
seconds.
Harvev ' nlans to follow the
f
profession of his father, who is
a doctor and an alumnus of Caro
lina. While at Carolina Dr. Har
vey was a Sigma Nu.
