tial here," said Dr. Graham,
who proposed the scale in his
ten-year review of the Univer
sity written for the Board of
Trustees in May, 1944.
In the report he proposed "(1)
the establishment at all three
Greater University institutions
of a salary scale for the teaching
staffs comparable to the salary
scales in comparable institutions
in the Association of American
Universities, hopefully and ap
proximately as follows instruc
tors $1800 to 2500; assistant
professors $2800 to $3500; as
sociate professors $3800 to
$4500; professors $4800 to
$6000 ; (2) that any income from
endowments strengthening the
teaching staff in all three insti
tutions be used to supplement
the state salary scale; (3 that
the earned surplus from the aux
iliary business enterprises be
used for the improvement of
these enterprises and as a con
tingent fund for the welfare of
the students and the develop
ment of the University; (4)
that wages be raised so as to
correct substandards of liv-
0
ing in accordance with the
fair labor standards of the na
tion. To this end we would co
operate with autonomous associ
ations of teachers and organiza
tions of workers and their chosen
representatives in accordance
with the democratic and enlight
ened procedures of the nation
fighlng for the freedom of re
ligion, speech, the press, uni
versities and the- autonomous
organizations of business man
and workers."
The report presented to the
trustees was substantially the
same as Dr. Graham's ten-year
report from 1934 to 1944 and in
cluded the same salary scale re
commended by him.

The work of the council is
not wholly centered in enter
tainment for the hospitalized
soldiers. They also supply items
which are unobtainable through
Red Cross or Army channels,
to the hospitals at ORD in
Greensboro and at Butner. These
items include such things as ra
dios; books, magazines, and mu
sical instruments.
The convalescents at Butner
receive no pass or leave privil
eges, and are unable to go into
Durham as the other men are.
Those men who are not ambula
tory patients are wheeled to
dances just to watch. For some
of the men this is the one night
each week that they are allowed
to remain up until 11 o'clock.
Gwen Morris, social chairman
of the town girls association and
Emily Tufts, president of the
town girls association, are in
charge of coeds going to dances
at Butner.

Mr. Hunt's reflections, as well
as the address of Dr. Graham,
show how earnestly the men of
the University are doing their
part towards world control, by
establishing and acting upon
right principles at home. My
only suggestion is that it will
be helpful if he can clarify his
meaning when he says "that one
(man) is not worth more than
another." It is true that in our
elections one man's vote counts
no more than another's; but
would he claim that there are no
differences in worth in the men
behind the votes? And is it wise
to ignore those differences? We
could not wisely choose our lea
ders, in any walk of life or field
of government, by placing
names of all men in a hat and
drawing at random the lucky
person. Nor would we wish to
choose our wife by such a meth
od of drawing!
Very truly yours,
James Lee Love, '84.
