Four veterans of last years Saint Louis Cardinals reported today ready for their first spring training. The four are second baseman Emil Verban, outfield ers Elvin "Buster" Adams, Al "Red" Schoendienst and pitcher Blix Donnelly. One of the outfield mainstays of the Detroit Tiger's Barney McCosky pulled a muscle in his back today and will be on the sidelines for several days. The Tigers have other troubles Eddie Lake and Bobb Maier both of whom refuse to sign have been officially listed as holdouts. Spencer Defeats Alderman Sextet Sparked by Marilyn Carmi chael and Missie Parker, Spencer-defeated Alderman by seven points Tuesday night. Alder man's Dot Janssen, Jane Heilner, and Nancy Helm, all Varsity players, provided tough opposi tion for the Spencer lassies. Although tied at the half, the Tri Delts came through with that extra tally needed to defeat the Chi O sextet. Scoring honors were pretty evenly distributed between Parker, and Andrews, Chi O, and Lamb, Tri Delt. All had six points, but Carleen and Driscoll, Tri Delt, followed close ly with five each. Louisville, Ky. The Univer sity of Georgia has defeated Georgia Tech 36 to 30 in the first round of the Southeastern con ference basketball tourney. Slocum, music professor, will be featured with the Mint Chamber Orchestra of Charlotte, Sunday afternoon. Mr. Slocum, flutist, will play the "B Minor Suite for Flute and String Orchestra" by Bach. The Mint Organization is directed by James C. Pfohl. Campus Humorists Asked to Contribute To S&F Production The script committee of Sound and Fury are on the prowl for campus humor for "The State of the Campus," so beware of where and when you give forth with your literary gems of am usement or they carry you away to their deep dark Sen of wit and hold you there until you guarantee them all rights on the remark and swear to laugh when it is used in "The State of the Campus." Whatever school of thought you happen to be from you should at least attend the results of their extensive research. They have combed the campus for humor and the culmination of their talents will be March 8 and 9 in the Spring Review State of the Campus. Council on Religion Organizes Tomorrow The Intercollegiate Council On Religion. in Life will meet to morrow afternoon at 3 : 00 o'clock in the Presbyterian Church lounge. The purpose of this meet ing is to get the Council reorga nized at Carolina. The organiza tion includes students from Duke, Carolina, and N.C.C.N. There will be a short business meeting to elect officers for the year and following will be a dis cussion concerning projects to work on for the year. ' - - -.-1 stirs 7 ml J TOAtCOMffly ft If Di Holds Record Discussion On Jewish Question The creation of a national Jewish state in Palestine and the abolition of all religious restric tions on international immigra tion and emmigration were the topics of discussion at one of the longest sessions held in the recent history of the Dialectic' Senate. " At 11 o'clock the sergeant-at arms announced the absence of a quorum, but an informal dis cussion continued until well into the night. The Di was opposed to the Jewish state in Palestine and felt that any discrimination be cause of religion is unjust. Nina Guard, . president, an nounced that the Di will meet in secret executive session next Wednesday night at 9 o'clock. Officers for the next quarter will be elected at that time, and other confidential business of the Sen ate will be conducted. , Miss Guard declared that she will not be a candidate for re election. A free throw by Mary land made the score six to three. The Old Liners held this lead until the end of the first period when the Tar Heels overcame the margin and forged ahead 9 to 8 on McKinney's goal. From there on out it was a question of how many points Carolina could run up. At half-time, Carolina led by 31 to 18. In the second period the margin was gradually lengthened by the brilliant hook shots of Dillon and the ball hand ling of McKinney. The leading scorer for Mary land was center Don Gleasner with seven points.
