.1. THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 1946 PAGE FOUR THE DAILY TAB HEEL Death Dim Kepi By Veterar As He Succumbs to Gas Fume By United Press , Diaries are kept by people who "want to look back and relive the good moments of their life most diaries, that is. Richard P. Gale, an Air Force veteran of Mound, Minnesota, started and finished a diary a few days ago. It was a diary of death a scrawled report to the world of Dick's self-sought appointment with death. The paper was found in the boy's clenched hand by police who, attracted by the sight of a car parked on a lonely road with its engine roaring found Gale slumped over the wheel. It wasn't until later that they learned that he was Richard Gale, Jr., son-in-law of news paper publisher John Cowles. Those statistics were unknown. Richard's last thoughts were public. - He wrote "Terrific smell of gas fumes, it's getting rather dark to write faculties seem to be temporarily sharpened." Then the veteran turned the page scrawled, "What is the proof two equals four? Does.it involve dropping a root?" The answer never made the paper. Death was growing clos er as the carbon monoxide fumes poured into the car. Richard managed to put dpwn "Joints feel funny, elbows especially, and wrists through chest now. No particular desire to get out. Chest filling up fast." And now his writing was only a line dragged across the paper tense and tortured. You can hardly make out the last words "Going, going," and then there is a weak line fad ing into nothing. That was the end of the diary by Richard P. Gale. It was the end of his life.
