BOBBING IN SPORTS
By Bob Goldwater
The Carolina campus awoke Saturday morning to learn that its
outstanding basketball coach of the past two seasons had accepted
a similar position with the Navaf Academy. After several weeks
of "watchful waiting," the CAA has let possible national recogni
tion in this sport next year slip through its fingers.
In no manner whatsoever do we blame Lt. Ben Carnevale for his
decision to accept Navy's most attractive offer "that I just couldn't
refuse." Neither will we condemn the CAA TOO MUCH at this
time, since that organization might happen to appoint a coach who
will produce another great aggregation to carry on the Tar Heel
court exploitations of the past season. . Instead, we will hold judg
ment until next winter to see if Goach Carnevale's departure means
as big a blow to Carolina basketball as everyone says. And to Lt.
Ben Carnevale go these parting
fine basketball teams and good luck
A few days ago, we took the trouble to walk over to lower Fetzer
field to watch Spring football practice and to say hello to Caro
lina's mentor, Carl Snavely. The
with the showings in the off-season
pep that the gridders have exhibited. It felt good to renew old
acquaintances with Chan v Highsmith, John Tandy, and George
Sparger, all important cogs in the 1942 Tar Heel grid machine.
Bad weather caused Carolina tennis enthusiasts to miss what
would have been the outstanding encounter here this season when
rain and a low mercury forced Friday's match against William and
Mary to be cancelled. The Indians, without a doubt, have one of
the strongest net teams fielded by a college in recent years. Coach
John Kenfield's charges will get a crack at the Indian lineup before
the campaign ends, however, since a date at the Williamsburg
school is included on their northern jaunt this week-end.
Despite a mediocre record of four wins and an equal num
ber of losses, the Tar Heel baseballers demonstrated their
true caliber Saturday by handing Navy its first loss of the
season. In fashioning a brilliant three-hitter, Hamp Coleman
established himself as a likely choice to receive Coach Bunn
Hearn's starting nod against a strong, Duke nine next week.
While on the subject of baseball, we'd like to take this oppor
tunity to crawl way out on a limb by predicting the following re
sults in the 1946 major league campaigns:
National League American League
Cardinals Bed Sox
Giants Yankees
Cubs Tigers
Dodgers Indians
Braves - Senators
Pirates Athletics
Phillies Browns
Reds White Sox
Just by way of comparison, if any students wish to submit
their selections on the outcome of the pennant races, well be
glad to total the results and report on how a cross section
of the Carolina campus picks the big leagues to finish this
year. N-

Five Games in Six Days Feature
Week of Play for Busy Hearnmen
By Bin Woestendiek
Back home after two impressive victories on the road over the
week-end, Carolina opens a week of baseball that will see the Tar
Heels play five games in six days when they battle the Durham
Bulls of the Carolina league on Emerson field today at 4 p. m.
Coach Bunn Hearn announced that he will start practically the
same club that defeated Virginia and Navy last week and would
throw either freshman southpaw Vin DiLorenzo or John McElrath,
a holdover from the 1945 squad, against the pro club.
The Carolina coach also said 3
he expects to substitute freely
today to give his men plenty of
work in preparation for the Blue
and White nine's opening Big
Four battle here tomorrow
against NC State, a tilt with the
Coastal Plain league Wilson club
at Wilson Thursday, a return
engagement with the Bulls at
Durham Friday, and a Southern
conference clash with the Uni
versity of Maryland here on Sat
urday.
The Tar Heels turned in their
best performance of the season
in nipping Navy by a 2-1 margin
at Annapolis Saturday. Hamp
Coleman was in brilliant form
against the Middies and stopped
the opposing hitters cold as he
scattered three bingles. Cleet
Cleetwood bit an impressive ho
mer and the rest of the lineup
performed well, playing a fast,
heady brand of ball.
