THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1946 THE DAILY TAR H KK1 PAGE THREE Carolina Golfers In Toprney .. Today IDELINE PORT! S on By Bill Woestendiek Press releases from Blacksburg, Va., about the VPJ spring foot ball practice sessions indicate that the Gobblers h,ave high hopes of turning out a good eleven come fall. Coach Jimmy Kitts, returning to the VPI job after almost four years in the Navy, has over 100 men out for the spring drills Eight former Gobbler gridiron stars have come home from the wars and Kitts is planning to shape his club around them. Jack Gallagher, Joe Foltz, Bob Smith, and 0. B. Martin, give the Tech eleven four experienced backfield men for a start, and "Kitts also has five linemen returning from last year's club to team with four ex-Gl huskies in the forward wall. Leading the re turning linemen from last fall is Russ Orr, who played a lot of tackle 'for the Virginians. Add to that lineup some newcomers and transfers from other schools and you'll find that it totals a capable eleven. The Gob blers will open what Carolina fans hope will be one of the Tar Heels' greatest seasons in Kenan stadium come September 28. So put that date down in your little black book for future ref erence. And here's another date, not so far in the future, that should appeal to anyone at all interested in tennis. Don Budge and Bobby Riggs will play one of the matches on their publicized tour here on May 14. All seats will be reserved. Some of you may remember a story the April Fool issue ran about a couple of coeds making the varsity tennis team and we thought we were kidding. United Press released a story from Miami yesterday that Miss Betty Ruth Hublert is playing o. 8 on the Miami University tennis team, annually one of the nation's best. She has already won her three opening matches and Coach Mercer Beasley predicts big things for the comely coed. Inci dentally, Miss Hublert says that her first three, victims remained perfect gentlemen. BASEBALL BANTER Seemed good to see Lou Hayworth talk ing to brother Jim yesterday as the brothers met for the first time in over a year. Lou, a Marine lieutenant, was a stellar third sacker and shortstop for Coach Buiin Hearn in '42-'43 and also played a lot of basketball . . . . Another High Point Hayworth, Myron, who caught for the St. Louis Browns in 1944, announced this week that he has signed a contract with the Torreon club of the Mexican league. Two Teams " " Hearn will probably play two teams ' again today as he did in defeating Durham Tuesday. The only man who has played every game for the Tar Heels this" spring is John . Gregory; first-baseman. Gregory, a much improved ball player over last year, is one of the leading Hit ters on the clutf. Rollo'T'fazfer and Gregory are pacing the Tar Heel batters at present with eight-game averages of .384 and .361. "Rip" Ryan returned to the Carolina lineup Tuesday for a few innings after being side lined for a week by illness, and will probably see more'action to day. Gregory, George Thompson, Bob Warren, and Ryan figure to start in the infield, but John Hearn, John Pecdra, John Colo nes. and Bo Hackney may all play. ' : The starting outfield remains in a state of uncertainty, al though it is fairly safe to say that Charlie Cole, who has been hitting well, Cleet Cleetwood, and Harry Beason seem to be the three leading candidates for. the jobs at present.
