Duke Jay vees Nip Tar Babies
With Last Inning Score, 6-5
xiaiiiua.yv nuns m,
Boseman Suffers Loss
The Carolina Tar Babies lost
a heart-breaker to the Duke jay
vees yesterday by a 6-5 sqore on
Emerson field. Carolina had vic
tory snatched from its grasp in
the first half of the ninth when
the Little Devils from Durham
capitalized on a walk, a passed
ball, and two base knocks to
bring in the winning runs.
The Tar Babies seemed to
have the game sewed up in the
fifth inning when they led, 4-1.
The game was temporarily stop
ped by rain in the fifth.
"Skeet" Webb started the
game on the mound for Caro
lina, but was relieved by Bose
man in the seventh inning. Bose
man went on to become the los
ing pitcher when the Durham
nine rallied in the final frame.
Halladay, Duke twirler, allowed
but four hits over the route to
win the ball game, but loose play
afield accounted for most of the
Carolina tallies.
Stevenson played a brilliant
game at third for the losers, cut
ting off one run at the plate and
robbing several Duke hitters
with his fine play around the hot
corner.
Kappa Sigs Extend
Win Streak to Six;
Rain Stops Murals
April -showers played havoc
with another day intramural
softball play yesterday as the
late afternoon rains caused post
ponement of all but five contests.
. In the feature tilt of the day
Kappa Sig No. 2 ran their win
ning streak to six straight as
they edged by Pi Lambda Phi,
5-3. Another thrill-packed con
test saw ROTC 1st Co. come
from behind in the final inning to
nose out Alexander, 7-6, while
Graham was downing RuflSn,
13- 6.
In other games SAE No. 2
had an easy time with the Betas,
winning 6-1, and Law School No.
2 took the measure of Lewis,
12-6.
The Phi Delt net team white
washed the Phi Kaps, 4-0 with
out dropping a set, while the
Deke water polo five, led by Grif
fin, was sinking the Delta Sigs,
14- 3. '

Tar Heels Battle Winners
Again Today in Game Here
Hearnmen Shut Out with Two Safeties
In Dropping First Big Four Engagement
Raleigh, April 24. Carolina batsmen looked at the best pitching
they've seen this year here today as Ernie Johnson fired a brilliant
two-hit shutout for North Carolina State to hand the Tar Heels a
5-0 shellacking in the first Big Four game of the year for the losers.
Coach Bunn Hearn will send either Hamp Coleman or Monk
Whiteheart to the mound tomorrow afternoon as the two teams
meet again on Emerson field at 4 p.m. State will probably counter
with hefty Curt Ramsey.
Johnson faced only 32 hitters"
as he limited the visitors to a
single by "Rip" Ryan in the
fourth and a pinch-hit double to
left in the ninth by Bo Hackney.
Ryan and Hackney were the only
two men to reach second and no
one got any farther than second
as the State hurler retired man
after man. Johnson struck out
only one man, but had the Tar
Heels popping up most of the
afternoon.
DiLorenzo Hurls
Vin DiLorenzo went the dis
tance for Carolina and was
touched for 12 safeties by the
Red Terrors, who bunched their
hits into three scoring innings.
Two singles and an error by
Ryan gave the home club a sin
gle tally in the third and Coach
Vic Sorrell's nine added three
more in the third on successive
hits by Rickus, Edwards, and
Wilson. Edwards steal of home
on a double steal with Wilson
highlighted the inning. The
final State score came in the
seventh when first-sacker Stan
ton blasted a triple to right and
trotted home on a two-bagger to
left by Rickus.
First 10 Retired
Johnson had retired the first
10 men to face him when Ryan
singled in the fourth. He then
retired every man, with the ex
ception of a walk to Charlie
Cole, until Hackney led off the
ninth by batting for DiLorenzo
and doubling. After Thompson
popped out to short, Ryan was
safe on Kohler's boot. Cleetwood
flew out to Courts, but Cole walk
ed again to load the bases with
two out in the Tar Heels' one and
only threat of the wet afternoon.
John Gregory bounced back to
the box and Johnson put the
finishing touch to his fine game
by throwing the last man out at
first.
The Tar Heels' loss today. was
their first in .Southern confer
ence play as well as in Big Four
competition. They will be out
for their first win in the state
loop tomorrow in an attempt to
avenge today's shutout.
Trackmen To Compete
In Intra-Squad Meet
The Tar Heel cindermen will
hold an intra-squad meet in Fet
zer field this afternoon. Field
events will begin at 3 p.m., with
the first running event getting
under way at 4 o'clock.
Coach Dale Ranson has been
holding the series of intra-squad
meets this week in preparation
for the two tough dual meets of
the season Duke and the Navy
on two successive week-ends.
