THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1946 PAGE FOUR THE DAILY TAR HEEL Taylor Lauds Shakespeare Gives New Slant On Writer's Value Emphasizing that Shakespeare had the happy faculty of being able to 'see the other fellow's side, Dr. George Coffin Taylor, widely known authority on the dramatist and a Kenan profes sor of English in the University of North Carolina, said in an address here last night that it is his hope that "Shakespeare's quality of mind will help our quality of mind if we expect to avoid another war. "While the war was on it was necessary for us to assume that all the virtues of mankind were monopolized by America and her Allies", he declared. "Now that the was is over the con tinuation of that self-certainty and Pharisaism on our part makes about the best approach to bringing on another war that I can conceive of." Dr. Taylor's address, entitled "Shakespeare, Thinker", was the third in the current series of lectures being- sponsored by the Humanities Division of the University. Previous ones were delivered by Dr. W. M. Dey on French poetry and by Dr. J. P. Harland on Greek archeological exploration. BOX SCORE (Continued from page three) a-Batted for Beason in 9th. Woody Herman gives Pancaes some of his typically fine blues singing. Vaughn Monroe delivers a change-of-pace tune with Ziggy Talent singing a fair version of Don't Lean on De Bell. Freddy Martin's dance recording of You're the Cause of It All from the new Danny Kaye film is a honey and should appeal great ly. Les Brown also offers excel lent dance treatment to In Love in Vain which is destined for high Hit Parade popularity this spring. Charlie Barnet messes around with Cement Mixer, a lot of jivey nonsense which Art Robey blaps through. Carmen Cavallero takes two movements from Rachmaninoff's No. 2 Con certo and what results is the best that any dance band can do with this serious music. RECORD OF THE WEEK: Dinah Shore is turning out the hits these days and her latest is a technical triumph for Colum bia. The balance and the record ing are excellent in All That Glit ters Is Not Gold. Besides, Dinah's soft spoken delivery of the punch line lyrics in the calypso style on this one make it a natural for instant popularity.
