FRIDAY, MAY 10, 1946 PAGE FOUE THE DAILY TAR HEEL VETS (Continued from first page) student body, due to the large number of veterans in school now. It is proposed that the house be turned over to an agent responsible to the student gov ernment, opened to the entire campus and a veteran be appoint ed as student manager. Guidance Available The guidance facilities of the University Testing Service, Vet erans Advisement Office, Uni versity Housing Office, and the regional office of the Veterans Administration here, make fur ther activities in this field by -the U VA unnecessary, the ex ecutive committee believes. Other campus organizations have recently taken a greater part in campus social activities, for which main purpose the UVA was organized, and the forming of American Legion and AVC posts on the campus makes joint action on veterans' problems pos sible by the new groups. Veterans Council Feeling that there is a need for some agency on the campus empowered to speak for the UNC veterans,, the executive com mittee proposes the setting up of a six-man student Veterans Council, to be chosen in a campus-wide election by all veterans. This council would represent ex servicemen on the campus in state and national affairs, and could mobilize the veterans at any time when joint action by all campus veterans seemed nec essary. "I wish to strongly urge all veterans, and any other inter ested persons, to attend the UVA meeting next Wednesday at which time these proposals will be put up to vote," stated Presi dent Stewart. (R-7930) LACKEY (Continued from page two) ascertained. Before this deci sion was made public I called the speaker of the legislature and explained the situation to him and he concurred with the de cision to declare the ballots in valid. The cry has now been raised that a portion of the student body has been "robbed" of its right to vote. I assure you that no perpetration of fraud was in tended by the elections commit tee. The fact that 118 votes were declared illegal was made public in its report to the legis lature and there has been no un necessary secrecy in its actions. I have never witnessed an elec tion in which at least some of the ballots have not been invali dated and somebody's duly cast vote declared illegal. In this case it is unfortunate that the fact is known that the contested votes would change the outcome of the referendum. The de cision as to whether or not the report of the committee should stand is in the hands of many more important people than I, but I would like to say that I think the election results should stand as they have been reported.
