Netters Seek
Sixth Shutout
In Succession
Duke Whitewashed
In Earlier Match
By Bob Goldwater
Carolina's high-flying racquet
men will seek to preserve their
shutout streak today when they
visit the Duke courts in a return
contest slated for 2 p. m.
The initial victims on th cur
rent whitewash list, having been
blanked April 30, the Blue
Devils are the main threat to
interrupt the Tar Heel shutout
skein, which appears to be of
major interest since little doubt
is raised as to the actual outcome
of the clash. Besides their sixth
straight clean sweep, the Blue
and White netmen will be gun
ning for their 14th triumph of
the campaign and fourth in Sou
thern Conference competition.
Probable Pairings
In the top pairing of the after
noon, Tar Heel captain Harold
Maass will be after his 11th win
of the season as he matches
strokes with the Blue Devil ace,
Bob Chapman. Sam Daniels'
probable opponent at the second
berth will be Bob Bodle. Stan
Griiner shoots for victory num
ber 13 from the number three
post against either Werner Jokob
or Bob Taylor, with the other
Duke player opposing Carolina's
Jim Nicholson, trying for his
11th win, in the fourth position.
Don Skakle, undefeated in eight
tilts, will attempt to make it nine
in a row against Bob McCuistron
and Dick Swigart opposes Jim
Bayne at number six.
In doubles, the Tar Heels will
field Maass and Gruner as the
top duo, Nicholson and Skakle
at the second pairing, and Dan
iels and Duke Wilder at num
ber three. I !

Duke Favored
Over Carolina
In Dual Meet
Tar Heels Choice
In Hurdles, Mile
By Jim Pharr
Carolina's trackmen will meet
a strong Duke team this after
noon in the Duke stadium in a
renewal of their annual dual
meet series. Field events will
start at 3 p.m.. with the first
running event,, the mile run, get
ting under way at 4 o'clock.
The Blue Devil cindermen are
rated on paper as about 15-point
favorites over the Tar Heels.
The Dukes look to be stronger in
the 100 yd. dash, the 220, the
440, and the two-mile run, in the
running events; and the high
jump, discus throw, and shot
put, in the field events.
Carolina is doped to have the
edge in the 880, the mile run,
and the high and low hurdles in
the running events ; and the pole
vault and javelin throw in the
field events. From past perform
ances, however, comparative
scores mean nothing in a Duke
Carolina meet and the Tar Heels
are pointing toward pulling an
upset over the Blue Devil run
ners.
Hurdles and Dashes
The hurdle events are expect
ed to be strongly contested with
Chunk Simmons and Dick Tay
lor pacing the Tar Heel hurdlers
against Scupine and Bill Simons
of Duke. The dashes are ex
pected to be another fast event,
with Laddie Terrell, Ted Haig
ler, Charlie Donnell, and Tom
Jordan running against Ausbon,
Aumen, Maxwell, and Neighbor
gall, of the Blue Devils.
In the 440, the Tar Heels will
run Charles Donnell, Jack Hes
ter, and Vernon Reiser against
Duke's Young, Neighborgall,
and Simons. Charles Tietjen,
Tom Turner, and James Briley
will carry Carolina hopes in the
880 against Bodine and Rosen
berg for Duke.
Mark Burnham, Charles Tiet
jen, Leonard Briley, John Strait,
Walter Francis, and Art Lamb
will pace the mile and two mile
runs for Carolina against Downs,

WAKE FOREST, May 10. Wake Forest won its third straight
Big Four ball game here today and accepted its second gift of the
year from Carolina's slumping Tar Heels by a 5-4 margin as the
Carolina club committed eight errors to kick away another ball
game.
Coach Bunn Hearn will take the Tar Heels to Durham tomorrow
for the second game of the Carolina-Duke series, scheduled to
start at 2 p. m. Monk White-? " ""
heart, who pitched a four-hit
victory for Carolina in the first
meeting between the two clubs,
will hurl again tomorrow.
Wake Scores Twice
Wake Forest scored twice in
the last of the seventh inning to
break a 3-3 tie and staved off a
last inning rally by Carolina to
win. Grandy and Skelding, who
combined to defeat the Tar Heels
in the previous meeting between
the two clubs, did the same thing
today, with Skelding coming on
in the seventh to get credit for
the win. Vin DiLorenzo pitched
seven-hit ball for the losers, but
terrible support afield beat him.
Dowda opened the seventh for
the Deacons by reaching first via
an infield single and stole second.
After Lougee flew out to center,
Sams was safe on Hackney's
boot, Dowda moving to third.
Red Cochran hit a roller back
towards the mound which Di
Lorenzo picked up off balance
and, in an attempt to catch
Dowda off third, threw wild to
let the run score, Sams going
around to third.
Passed Ball
Sams came home on a passed
ball by catcher Jim Hayworth,
although the Tar Heels claimed
that Edwards had fouled the
pitch. However, the umpire's de
cision was that the catcher had
simply missed the ball, and the
eventual winning run was on the
books.
The visitors got off to a one
run advantage in the opening
frame on two walks and two
errors by second-baseman Fleet.
The Deacs came back with two
markers in the second to go
ahead when they combined two
hits with a wild throw to second
by Hayworth and an error in left
by Tom Clayton.
The home nine made it 3-1 in
the fifth when Dowda singled,
stole second and came in to score
on Lougee's one-baser.
Warren Triples
Bob Warren drilled a triple to
left field in the sixth inning to
score Clayton, who had singled,
and Hackney, who had reached
