Only two opposing teams were able to register more than two wins in any one match, Navy losing by a 5-4 margin and William & Mary scoring the one decision over Carolina by a 7-2 count. ' Heading the Tar Heel victory parade for the season is Stan Gruner, who occupied the num ber three position. Gruner marked up 14 wins in 15 en counters while his doubles part ner and the team's top ranking ace, Harold Maass, scored 12 triumphs in 15 outings to place second. Playing from the num ber four berth, Jim Nicholson registered 11 wins and two de feats, one of the latter coming by default when he injured his ankle. Sam Daniels, number two for most of the season, also scored 11 triumphs but was charged with one additional loss. Two Undefeated Players Two members of the team went through the campaign without dropping a match. Don Skakle maintained his unbeaten streak through 10 clashes while Ed Dameron went undefeated in eight encounters. Mel Jordan captured nine decisions while, dropping two before leaving! school early this month and Dick Swigart was victorious in seven of nine contests. Maass and Gruner were the leading doubles combination, racking up 10 wins in 11 tilts. Nicholson and Skakle scored eight triumphs in nine matches and doubles specialist Duke Wilder participated in 10 doubles victories against two defeats while teaming with five diff erent partners. - - m n i Three members oi tne nme- man outfit that saw action dur ing me campaign have played in their last match for Carolina. Maass, Jordan, and Dameron have all used up their years of eligibility, while the remaining six will probably report to Coach Kenfield next season. The Tar Heels were sidetracked again Monday af tenioon when the Deacons from Wake Forest stopped the Hearnmen's three game winning streak behind the four-hit pitching of Jake Pierce. Vin DiLorenzo, freshman southpaw from Bergenfield, N. J., is a possible pitcning cnoice today, staff has been disrupted by the titanic 18-inning struggle with State Saturday and Monday's game that saw Carolina use three pitchers. Pitched 12 Innings DiLorenzo pitched 12 gruel ling innings against the Wolf pack in Saturday's protested Tar Heel win before beiner relieved by Hamp Coleman, the eventual winning hurler. Coleman pitched five innings then and came back to hurl a couple against Wake Forest Monday. Whiteheart, who shut out the soldiers with four hits while striking out 17 in the previous meeting between the two clubs, was batted out of the box by Wake Forest in the third in ning Monday. John McElrath, another possible starter, finished up the Wake game. State College, at present in front of the Big Four race by one game over Duke, has filed a protest over losing the marathon battle to the Tar Heels last Sat urday.
