Outfield Flies Drive Home Two Runs
As Locals Whip Fort Bragg Visitors
By Bill Woestendiek
A two-run rally in the last half of the eighth inning gave Caro
lina a 3-1 win over a First Army nine from Fort Bragg on Emerson
field yesterday afternoon behind the seven-hit hurling of Vin
DiLorenzo, who struck out 13 visitors in a tight pitching duel.
The soldiers had scored a single run in the top of the eighth to
tie up the game and the freshman lefthander started the winning
rally for the home club promptly in the latter half of the frame

Hackney Hit by Pitch
Bo Hackney was hit by a
pitched ball thrown by Duke
Duperron, advancing DiLerenzo
to second. Rip Ryan then laid
down a pretty bunt which he
beat out to load the sacks.
Bill Webster came up to hit
for Charlie Cole and blasted a
long fly to right, scoring the Tar
Heel slinger. Hackney raced to
third on the same play, and

came in to tally the final run
when Harry Beason hit a long
fly to deep centerfield.
Both pitchers hurled excellent
ball for the first five innings,
neither side making the sembl
ance of a threat, and a few scat
tered infield hits were the only
blows off either pitcher.
Single in Sixth
Hackney opened the sixth by
lining a single to left. Ryan sac

was being thrown out, third to
first. Beason followed with a
hard grounder to short, and
when Smith let the ball get
through him, Hackney came in
to score the first run of the
game.
The way the New Jersey
southpaw was tossing, it seem
ed as if that single score would
be the margin of victory until
the soldiers evened matters in
the eighth.
With two out, Gaines singled
He then stole second
base and came home on a drive
to left by Tassie.
DiLorenzo kept the visitors at
bay with the exception of the
eighth and hurled a steady ball
game. Duperron also hurled
good ball for the losing nine.
Ryan was the only Carolina
man to hit safely more than
once, singling in the fourth and
eighth frames. The game was
played in a hurry, taking only
95 minutes.
