With Eiglith-Iiimng Rally Marines Win Over Grads For 'A' Title Deke Team Defeats Phi Kappa Sigmas In the big intramural soft ball game of the day, the Marines defeated the Grads, 10-7, to make them the winners of league "A" championship. This was the sec ond victory for the Marines over the Grads to determine the league champion. The Dekes handed the Phi Kappa Sigmas their first defeat of the season by scoring a 6-4 victory over the league-leading softballers. The Phi Delts No. 2 team trounced the ATO's 8-3. The SAE second team registered a tf-3 decision over St. Anthony Hall. The Zeta Psi's stayed in the running for the loop crown by putting on an eight-run splurge in the second inning to defeat the SAE No. 1 team 9-8. The PiKA's grabbed a close 8-6 verdict from the Sigma Nu's. In the one tennis match of the afternoon, the Betas out play ed the Phi Kappa Sigs. A story released through Winston-Salem yesterday said that McKinney has accepted a posi tion in the personnel department of Hanes Hosiery Mills and is scheduled to report in June. McKinney, the six foot giant that lead the White Phantoms to the N.C.A.A. cage championship, who has another year of eligibil ity, will end his long college career and will join the com pany's squad as a player. McKinney, a Durnam High product, said he was forced to leave Carolina because of finan cial reasons. UNIVERSITY BEAUTY SHOP Phone 6691 Trackmen Prep For IC4A Meet At Annapolis Nine Carolina Men Enter in Carnival Carolina's cindermen are priming for the I.C.4A. carnival at Annapolis Saturday, with nine Tar Heel trackmen carrying hopes for individual honors in the Eastern Intercollegiate event. Carolina will place entries in the mile, two-mile, javelin, dashes, hurdles ,high jump, pole vault, broad jump, and 440 events. The Tar Heels will have their strongest entries in the hurdles, and lounger distances, where the trackmen have been picking up consistent first places all season. In the mile run, Carolina will enter Mark Burnham, from Shel- burne, Mass. Burnham has taken four events in meets this season, with an individual score of 27 1-7. Walter Francis, from Hope- dale, Mass., will run in the longer two-mile run for the Tar Heels. Francis has 10 1-4-points for the season, for several sec ond and third places. Henry GifFord, from Globe, Ariz., will be the Carolina entry in the javelin throw. GifFord picked up three first places, un til declared inelgible in Southern Conference competition. Ted Haigler, from Sanford, will carry Carolina hopes in the dashes. Haigler has one first, three. seconds,. and 2 thirds, for a season total of 16 1-2. In the pole vault, Carolina will enter Hank Hickman, and Norman McLeod, both of San- ford. McLeod has picked up 18 points this season, with four firsts, while Hickman has gar- nered 14 1-3 noints with two firsts, two seconds, and one xnira. Two hurdlers will carry the Tar Heel colors in the I.C.4A. classic, Chunk Simmons, of Charlotte, ancl Dick Taylor, of Raleigh. Simmons is the high individual scorer for the track men, with 76 points, while Tay lor has 19 points, with five sec onds, two thirds, and one fourth. Laddie Terrell, from Raleigh, will be a Carolina entry in the dash and broad jump events. Terrell has copped a season to tal of 20 1-4 points, with two first, two seconds, three thirds, and a fourth m the Southern Conference meet. The Carolina trackmen will end their season on June 1, with the running of the annual Inva tational A.A.U. Track and Field meet. This meet will be open to athletes throughout the state by invitation. Both pitchers hurled excellent ball for the first five innings, neither side making the sembl ance of a threat, and a few scat tered infield hits were the only blows off either pitcher. Single in Sixth Hackney opened the sixth by lining a single to left. Ryan sac rificed, and the Carolina left- 1 2 0 0 0 fielder held second while Cole was being thrown out, third to first. Beason followed with a hard grounder to short, and when Smith let the ball get through him, Hackney came in to score the first run of the game. The way the New Jersey southpaw was tossing, it seem ed as if that single score would be the margin of victory until the soldiers evened matters in the eighth. With two out, Gaines singled He then stole second base and came home on a drive to left by Tassie. DiLorenzo kept the visitors at bay with the exception of the eighth and hurled a steady ball game. Duperron also hurled good ball for the losing nine. Ryan was the only Carolina man to hit safely more than once, singling in the fourth and eighth frames.
