Alcott, director of art, has asked for more materials to be given to Person hall for the benefit of art students. Mr. Alcott said, "If people would only ransake their attics and cel lars for any old pieces of furniture, vases, curtains or pictures that they can no longer find use for and give them to Person hall, it would be of immeasurable aid. The art studio just hasn't enough to go around and sup ply all the students." Mr. Allcott made it clear that any gifts, no mat ter what the vintage, would be welcomed. Hight Chosen President Of Old West Dormitory Students living in Old "West elect ed Bill Hight president of the dormi tory at a meeting Tuesday night. Hight and other officers will serve un til the end of the spring term. Other officers elected are : vice-presi-dent, Jiggs Asken, secretary-treasurer, Thomas Moore; and' councilors, Fred Mills, Hall Miles, and Charles Kistler. Athletic manager will be appointed !by the officers and will be announced later. On Prague Council Wednesday Night James Wallace, who returned to Chapel Hill this week from Prague, will deliver his report on the proceed' ings of the Prague World Student conference in Hill Hall at 8:00 next Wednesday evening. UNC was one of the fifteen U.S. universities, and the only one in the south, invited to send delegates to the worldwide assembly, which was in ses sion from August 18-31. The expenses of Wallace, who was selected by a joint faculty student board, to rep resent Carolina, totalled nearly $900, all donated by campus organizations Wallace's report next Wednesday, according to Walt Stuart, chairman of the preparatory committee, will cover both the general work of the student conference and his own as one of 25 U.S. delegates. Spokesman Charges Industry Preparing To Fight Meat Import Denver, Oct. 10 (UP) An indus try spokesman says the entire live stock industry is prepared to fight any attempts to import meat into this coun try from South America. F. E. Mollin, executive secretary of the American National Livestock As sociation, ridicules the charge that cattlemen are withholding shipments because of resentment of OPA con trols. Mollins has just completed a tour of Southwestern states. He says he found active trading in every section he visited. And he adds : "Practically all cattle destined for market this fall have been sold and are awaiting shipment." The livestock spokesman goes on: "There is no magic way of making beef overnight, but consumers would benefit immediately if ceilings were lifted and the black market stamped oue." (R-2474) Durham, Oct. 10 Duke's Blue Devils are figuring that the best way to "cross Navy's T" at Baltimore Satur day is to set up a sound defense against the team that has covered over 400 pards rushing in two games. The Blue Devils figure that they won't do a lot of scoring against a Navy team that has a fine line sparked by two All American players and that their best chances lie in slowing down the power ful Millie offence. An ex-Army man, Coach Wallace Wade is not necessarily an advocator of Naval tactics, but he's out to cross Navy's T, and since he has always been a builder of fine refensive teams, he has wasted no time this week in train ing his Blue Devils to stop the Middies' big guns. Revolts Are Beginning In Portugal Cities Lisbon, Portugal, Oct. 10 (UP) Revolts have broken out in at least two cities in Portugal, according to author itative sources and the government has ordered troops to crush them. An informal dance in Woollen gymnasium at 9:00 this evening is scheduled by the UVA to open its social season. Only members of the veterans association will be admit ted, but provisions have been made to accept membership fees at the door tonight. Music for the affair is to be fur nished by the Carolinians, who will present a new trumpet artist, Bill Barnes. LEGISLATURE (Continued from page 1) floor." Note Book Conditions A bill setting down regulations for the care of legislators' notebooks was referred to the Archives committee. It stated that each representative was responsible for the condition of his notebook, and must turn it in at the end of each session. There was little discussion on the holiday extension bill. Legislator Broadf oot remarked that a date might be named which would serve as a sub stitute for January 2nd, but acquiesced in favor of the suggestion that it be left up to the administration. Weaver Names Twelve As Convocation Ushers Twelve students from the YWCA cabinet and the Honor Council have been chosen by Dean of Students Fred Weaver to serve as ushers at today's convocation in Memorial Hall. The six girls from the cabinet are Happy Clark, Nonnie, Morris, Gladys David, Ann Nick, Ann Dickinson, and Virginia Gaston. The men serving as ushers, from the council are Whit Osgood, Cal War ren, Ray JefFeries, Frank Hill, Frank Williams, and Pete Pully. Voice Registration Begins in Hill Hall Students wishing to take private voice lessons are requested to make reservations now for the winter quar ter. If reservations are not made with the secretary in Hill hall before October 25 the student cannot expect to take lessons in the winter quarter. Dormitories Must Hold Elections Immediately All dormitories that have not com pleted elections are reminded to do so at once and turn in the list of those elected and their addresses to James Wallace, Ruffin 106, by tonight. All counselors are reminded of a forth coming meeting the first of next week to elect officers for the year. A definite date will be set later. WSSF MEETING TOMORROW The state planning conference for the World Student Service Fund will meet tomorrow at Woman's College in Greensboro. Plans will be laid for the forthcoming drive. Both the YWCA and the YMCA will be represented. All Seniors Must Get Yack Photos Only 121 seniors of the approxi mately 900 enrolled have made ap pointments for Yack pictures, Bet tie Washburn, senior class editor, announced yesterday. Yack workers will be on duty in the YMCA lobby this afternoon from 2 until 5 o'clock and tomor row morning from 9 o'clock until noon. A space fee of $3:50 must be paid when the appointments are made. Senior class , appointments will not be made after tomorrow morn ing, Washburn announced. Photography of the senior sec tion of the yearbook begins Mon day, October 14 and ends Friday, October 26. Student Union Board To Meet at 4 O'clock There will be a meeting of the Cta ham Memorial Board of Directors at 4 o'clock today in the Grail Room of the student union. CPU Applications Are Available Today Applications for membership in the Carolina Political Union will be avail able today at the YMCA information desk, and should be filled out as soon as possible by prospective members. President Jerry Davidoff asked yester day that the blanks be turned in to the Y desk or to Membership Chairman George Stenhouse at the ATO house, adding that personal interviews would be arranged. With an additional five member ships added to the limited enrollment of 25 students in the CPU, seven va cancies are now open. Egyptian Student To Speak Tonight Selah el Abd, Egyptian student, will speak on "Mohammedanism" tonight, following the regular Friday night supper at 6:15 o'clock at the. Baptist church. The first of the fall quarter series of lectures and forum discussions of time ly religious topics sponsored by the Baptist Student Union was held last week when Dr. P. H. Epps spoke on the ''World religions and their Reli gious Influence." Under the direction of Reverend J. C. Herrin, University Baptist student chaplain, the BSU has initiated a var ied and timely program of Sunday School study courses which will be taught at the Sunday morning church school hour, 9:45 o'clock. Based upon a canvass of opinion among students as to what subjects seemed to be of most interest and bene fit, the following four classes have been organized: "Christian Theolo gy," taught by Dr. Helmut Kuhn, Uni versity professor of philosophy; "A guide to Bible Study," taught by Rev erend J. C. Herrin, Baptist Student chaplain; "The International Sunday School Lesson," taught by Dr. G. C. Kyker, professor in the School of Meli- cme; and "Christian Marriage," taught by Mrs. E. R. Groves, member of the sociology faculty. FRESHMAN COUNCIL The Freshman Friendship Coun cil had its first regular meeting last night. Officers were elected and plans were 'made for the comming year. Lewis Thorpe of Rocky Mount, N. C, was elected President; Ed. Hamil ton of Atlantic, Vice President; Aub rey Dowgett of Greensboro, Secre tary and Erwin Danziger of Chapel Hill, Treasurer. The next meeting is this coming Wednesday and it is hoped that all Telephone Service Cut From Spain-Portugal New York, Oct. 10 (UP) Tele phone communications between Spain and Portugal have been suddenly and mysteriously cut off. A few hours ago, telephone operators in Madrid were told by operators in Lisbon that only official calls were being accepted. But a short while later, even official calls couldn't be placed. No explanation was given. . In London, an official of the Portu guese Embassy says he doesn't know of anything wrong in Portugal, which might cause suspension of telephone service.
