SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1946 THE DAILY TAR HEEL Page Tfcreo omrtM In IC4A Rum SPORT. SPIN Marnier with IRWIN SMALLWOOD WAKE FORESrvcame into Kenan stadium yesterday afternoon expecting to beator at least come close to it-the Tar Heels through the air. This wasn't the case, however, for instead Caro lina passed for three of four touchdowns to decisively topple the visiting Deacons. And Wake Forest scored once on the ground and once in the air. . "Those two long passes beat us." Thus opined Coach Peahead Walker of Wake Forest as the crowd of 30,000 proceeded to swarm onto the field where the Tar Heels had just finished gaining their sixth triumph of the season. "Charlie Justice is All-American in every respect," Walker continued "He is the greatest runner I have ever seen, and he has no equal with the possible exception of Glenn Davis, Army's great back. In addition to that," said Walker, "he is a great kicker as well." Giving credit to his own Deacons for their game which was far better than the 'flat' performance against Duke last week Walker said "Nick Sacrinty played a whale of a game for us, and his passes were superb. Leon etti was our outstanding defensive player, and his offensive line play was good, too." "Carolina played better than we did," Walker concluded, "although we played one of our best games of the year." The gray-thatched Snavely, snowed by swarming alumni congratulating him for the performance of his Tar Heels, said that "We played about our best game this season, although we still hope to improve. We had been get ting ready for this game for a long time," Snavely continued, "and we were just on edge for the Deacons." - . The Carolina Choo Choo, Charlie Justice, was making his way to the showers, but he was stopped when Snavely put out his hand to Justice in a congratulatory handshake. "I want to shake your hand," said Snavely. And rightly he should, for it was the work of Justice that kept Carolina ready to break loose to score every minute of the game. Commented Snavely," Justice is just a magnificent little piece of football equipment. He demonstrated again that he is a wonderful team player." Of the Deacons, Snavely said that "Wake Forest should be proud of the game the Deacons played. Their passing attack was one of the most perfect ex hibitions I have ever seen. And you just can't stop a perfect pass." The continued great offensive work of Justice was the outstanding piece of individual work, but one thing that can't be overlooked is the passing of big Fullback Walter Pupa. Pupa, who has been on an improving road all season, passed three times for touchdowns, once to Justice, who had just run 62 yards from deep punt formation to set up the score, once to Bob Cox and ence to Art Weiner. Jim Camp and Jack Fitch, wingbacks each deserve praise as well, for it was Camp who set up the final touchdown with a 26-yard run on a double reverse. Fitch, getting back into his form of 1943, gained 37 yards in five tries. Justice, in the ground gaining department, negotiated 139 yards in 12 attempts, for an average of 11.6 yards per try. It was Justice's punting early in the game that kept Carolina out of the hole, and finally his run from punt formation that started the Carolina offen sive train to moving. Justice punted seven times in all for an average of 49 per kick. His first two were for 62 and 71 yards. Joe Romano, one of Carolina's most outstanding flankmen, was the man- of-the-hour with five minutes to go, for he broke through the Wake Forest line to throw passing Nick Sacrinty for 14 and 10-yard losses in a row. It was his alert tackling that took the final life out of the Deacons and assured a Carolina win. Immediately after the game, talk turned toward the game for next week with Duke here in Kenan stadium. "Will Carolina beat Duke?" That could be heard everywhere, and Snavely had this to say when he was quizzed on the same subject: "It depends on whether we can stay up or not. We are liable to be flat' after the good day today, and we have probably lost our best Wpinpr for the same." (Note: Weiner had his knee aOQ J. VA knocked out of ioint. but his immediate condition was undeterminable.) In its final game before Carolina, Duke thoroughly trounced South Carolina in a bruising game by the score of 39-0. Rock Brinkley and Nick Sacrinty advanced the ball to an other first down on the 10, Brinkley carried for an additional four and Nick Sacrinty drove over left tackle for the score. Bo Sacrinty's placement was good and the Deacons took the lead by a single point, 7-6. This time Carolina wasted no time in coming back. Back on their own 15-yard stripe after another long Cochran punt, the Tar Heels began their goalward march, with Justice and Pupa carrying to a first down on the Carolina 47. One minute re mained in the first half when Pupa faded back, evaded several would-be tacklers and uncorked a long heave that Weiner gathered in on the Wake Forest 15. Shaking off the safety- man, the big end crossed over with the tally that put Carolina in front for the remainder of the battle. Cox again How They Gained! Time Runs Out With only 35 seconds left in the first half, the Deacons staged a threat that fell short by 12 yards before time ran out. Nick Sacrinty returned the kickoff to the Wake Forest 47 and on the first play the Deacons passing ace heaved to Gordon Studer, who took the pigskin on Carolina's 30-yard line and scampered to the 12. The gun sounded before the Deacons had. time to start another play and the Caro lina advantage remained intact. Near the start of the third quarter, Justice made another of his pretty runs, this time on a punt return. Starting on his own 37, the Asheville speedster dodged his way along the left side of the field and, aided by beautiful blocking, advanced to the Wake Forest 34 for a gain of 29 yards. On a reverse, Camp fumbled and Tom Fetzer recovered for the Deacons. Three plays later Camp intercepted a Sacrinty aerial and returned to the INTRAMURAL MEETING All intramural officials are re quested to meet in the intramural office tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock. Cox' kick was good and Caro lina had a 12-point margin, 19-7. The Deacons came right back to reg ister a second time and keep hopes of victory alive. With Nick Sacrinty and Cochran doing the pitching, Wake Forest began a drive from deep in their territory that was climaxed shortly after the start of the fourth quarter when Nick Sacrinty unleashed a 50-yard heave that Bradley took on Carolina's three-yard stripe and car ried across. Bo Sacrinty again con verted to bring the Deacons within five points of the Tar Heels, 19-14. Carolina's final touchdown drive needed only two plays to cover 46 yards. A double reverse, Pupa to Justice to Camp was good for 25 yards and then Justice scooted the remaining 91 vjrrris to navdirt. Cox was suc cessful on a second attempt for con version after a penalty had been called on the first and the scoring for the afternoon was completed.
